Jason Dunn is proving that independent music is stronger than ever.
The former Hawk Nelson frontman revealed that his brand-new solo album Formerly Known As... has already surpassed 10,000 streams on Spotify alone just days after release - a milestone Dunn admitted he never expected to hit so quickly.
"I honestly can't believe 'Formerly Known As...' has already reached 10,000+ streams on Spotify alone!" Dunn shared on social media. "I thought I'd see 1,500-2,000 by the weekend. This is unreal! Independent music is alive and well!!!"
Released on May 22, the 10-track pop-punk and rock album marks Dunn's first solo full-length project since 2014's The Grand Adventures of Hank Neilsen. The record leans heavily into the nostalgic energy that made Hawk Nelson a staple of 2000s Christian pop-punk - complete with catchy choruses, emotional honesty, and high-energy guitars.
The album also serves as a deeply personal reflection on Dunn's turbulent journey over the past decade. Following his departure from Hawk Nelson in 2012, Dunn publicly battled alcoholism, experienced a painful crisis of faith, and stepped away from the spotlight before eventually finding healing and restoration.
Songs like "Billy Enforcee" revisit his rise from a teenage touring musician to where he is today, while "Dear Hawk" offers a heartfelt message to his former bandmates. Elsewhere, tracks such as "January 10" and "Ryan's Song" reveal Dunn's softer side through emotional tributes to his children.
Reviewers have praised the album for recapturing the classic Hawk Nelson sound fans grew up with. JesusFreakHideout described the project as "the perfect formula for a good pop/punk record," noting that longtime fans who still know every word to Letters to the President "will be thrilled."
With Formerly Known As..., Jason Dunn isn't just revisiting his past - he's reclaiming it.
