Brandon Lake Pauses Packed CMA Fest Cowboy Church to Pray for Woman Who Collapsed in Crowd

Christian music star Brandon Lake paused his sold-out Cowboy Church gathering at CMA Fest on Sunday morning to pray for a woman who collapsed in the crowd, reminding thousands gathered along Nashville's riverfront that caring for people is more important than any performance.

The emotional moment occurred during Lake's highly anticipated Cowboy Church event at the Chevy Riverfront Stage, one of the most heavily attended faith-centered gatherings of the festival. As first responders worked their way through the densely packed audience, Lake immediately halted the service.

"Can we stop? This is more important," Lake told the crowd as emergency personnel rushed to assist the woman.

Witnesses reported that medics spent approximately 10 minutes making their way through the audience before reaching the woman. While soft instrumental music played, attendees stood quietly as emergency crews provided medical care. The woman was eventually transported backstage on a medical cart with an IV attached and was reportedly conscious when she left the area.

Lake then led the thousands in prayer.

"In Jesus' name, we ask right now that you would just minister to this person. Revive them right now, give them strength," he prayed.

The incident highlighted the heart behind Cowboy Church, a ministry initiative Lake has described as a place for "the wanderers, the worn-out, the misfits, and the ones who aren't sure they belong anywhere." Despite the interruption, the atmosphere remained one of worship, compassion and unity as attendees joined together in prayer.

The event attracted such a massive turnout that organizers were forced to stop admitting attendees before Lake even took the stage. Crowds filled the hillside overlooking the Cumberland River and stretched well beyond the venue entrance.

Gospel Music Association President Jackie Patillo praised the growing intersection of faith and country music represented by events like Cowboy Church.

"Faith and culture are colliding in really beautiful ways right now, and CMA Fest is one of the best places to see just how deeply that's reflected in country music," Patillo said. "Brandon Lake's Cowboy Church concert, along with Jamie MacDonald and Leanna Crawford performing throughout the week, is a perfect example."

Lake opened the worship service with a message of hope and encouragement.

"This is good news this morning," he told the crowd. "God's not done yet."

The star-studded event featured appearances from multiple artists, including Dan + Shay, who performed "She Believes in Me" and spoke about the impact their wives have had on their lives and careers.

"Speaking of, our brides are here, and so I know this is Cowboy Church, but we're going to sing a love song," Lake said. "Because the truth is, I don't think we'd be the men that we are if it wasn't for the women in our lives."

Country music superstar Lainey Wilson also made a surprise appearance during the service. The reigning CMA Entertainer of the Year shared how conversations about faith eventually led to a songwriting collaboration with Lake, delighting the audience with her unexpected appearance.

As the service drew to a close, Lake delivered a powerful gospel message to those who may have felt distant from God.

"Listen, I know it's hot," he said. "Grace is so much bigger than any sin or any mess you've gotten yourself in trouble with. But the Holy Ghost is here and I got to take advantage of the fact that we have a packed out crowd. Maybe somebody got dragged here by your grandma or something, who said, 'We're going to a country rock concert.' Well, surprise, you came to church."

Following the event, Lake reflected on the unforgettable experience in a social media post.

"I am SPEECHLESS!! Words don't even do justice to what happened this morning. God is so good at Cowboy Church. LET'S GO!!! Will remember this forever," he wrote.

Lake was one of several Christian artists making an impact during CMA Fest 2026. Earlier in the festival, country music veteran Jo Dee Messina welcomed Lauren Daigle to the stage for a worship-filled performance of "Who Else," creating another memorable moment of faith on one of country music's biggest stages.

As faith-based artists continue to gain visibility within mainstream country music, events like Cowboy Church demonstrate the growing appetite for worship, testimony and gospel-centered messages in public spaces. For many attendees, Lake's decision to stop the concert and pray served as a powerful reminder that ministry often happens in the unexpected moments.

The morning may have featured chart-topping artists and surprise appearances, but it was a spontaneous prayer for a stranger in need that became one of CMA Fest's most memorable moments.
