Microsoft Lumia: The Truth About Microsoft's Ditching of Nokia and Windows Phone Brands
There are rumors and speculations spreading in the online world about Microsoft ditching Nokia and Windows Phone brands in favor of the latest "Microsoft Lumia."
According to Entrepreneur, the decision about ditching Nokia brand is not really a surprise. Microsoft has acquired the handset business of Finnish company in April for a cost worth of $7.5B. As part of the contract, Nokia will keep the name yet it will licensed to Microsoft for ten years. Well, this looks like the Redmond, a company based in Washington, is ready to kick the name soon.
Microsoft has hinted about its plans of killing operating system on Windows Phone and Nokia brands. But, Daily Tech cleared that Microsoft is not killing off the Windows Phone. But rather, the company is searching to limit confusions and put emphasis on Lumia and Windows brands.
Last month, Microsoft started redirecting visitors from the official website of Nokia to its official website for Microsoft Mobile. In addition, in its latest commercials for HTC One 8 and Lumia 930, Windows Phone was not mentioned. There is also another commercial for Cortana, the Siri version of Microsoft, which only makes a URL reference to the Windows Phone.
If such clues are not enough, there is an internal document that leaked, which revealed that Microsoft would actually drop Nokia from the product references during this coming holiday. France is the first country to witness the rebranding, transitioning from Nokia France to the new Microsoft Lumia on the social media platforms including Twitter and Facebook. Some countries will also see some changes after its launch.
The Verge also reported that Microsoft already confirmed the forthcoming rebranding. As of now, users are advised to be updated with the latest news to find out the real deal about the report.
Microsoft has introduced Windows Phone 7 to the world back in 2010, which is followed by Windows Phone 8 in year 2012. The recent shipping smartphone OS from Microsoft is the Windows Phone 8.1 Update 1 that is bowed this summer.
Microsoft has also announced its intentions of buying the devices and services of Nokia and completed its acquisition in April 2014.
