'Transformers: Age of Extinction' Premiere Gives China Its Biggest Box Office Opening History
"Transformers: Age of Extinction" bested "The Monkey King", a Chinese Film, as the largest opening of the year after breaking the opening day record in Hong Kong, which is something of a success for Chinese box office that has a fraught co-dependency with the Hollywood.
The opening day lets the movie gained $27M and its weekend gross worth of $97M, which made the filed as one of the highest grossing films in mainland China. The film tops Avatar.
After US, the Chinese box office is considered as the second largest in the world and this continues to grow. The reliance of Hollywood on the Chinese box office supplements domestic gross, which has led to tension between the Chinese regulators and American studios who are seen determined to see Chinese films retain dominance in box-office. However, even if the success of the film is good news for the theater chains in China, it also represents disappointment to the film industry of Chinese.
International Business Times reported that the Film Bureau at the State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film, and Television head, Zhand Hongsen, appealed to the theater chains in China to limit the number of screens that devote to "Transformers: Age of Extinction".
According to Variety, the film used the original song of Imagine Dragons, which titled "Battle Cry". Bay used the song at the film's critical points in collaboration with the composers of the film Hanz Zimmer and Steve Jablonsky, who helped the process.
The success of the film in China is not an accident. "Transformers: Age of Extinction" was already promoted in China and China Movie Media Group, the co-production partner of the film. The film's producers also had Chinese audiences in mind ever since it was created. Some parts of the film was filmed in mainland China. However, many are still not happy with the premiere of the movie as it more Chinese embraced the foreign film instead of their own creation.
Based on Hollywood Reporter, "Transformers: Age of Extinction" features Nicola Peltz, Han Geng, Li Bingbing, and Mark Wahlberg and was released in the theaters on June 27, 2014.
