Did Cartoon Network Just Show Its First Gay Kiss On 'Clarence?' (WATCH)
2014 marks a history for Cartoon Network as the year when it features its first gay characters through its series "Clarence" since it was launched on Oct. 1, 1992.
It must be noted though that Cartoon Network is not the first one to do this. The Disney Channel featured its first ever gay characters, a lesbian couple, in its sitcom, "Good Luck Charlie."
On the other hand, while Cartoon Network's first ever gay characters have already made their debut, it has been revealed that their appearance was still subject to censorship, Huffington Post has learned.
Created by Skyler Page, "Clarence" tells a story of an optimistic young boy named Clarence voiced by Page himself and his two best friends Jeff voiced by Sean Giambrone and Sumo voiced by Tom Kenny.
In its episode titled "Neighborhood Grill," Clarence's teacher, Miss Baker, is waiting for her blind date at the local restaurant Chuckleton's when she mistakes a handsome man as her potential setup.
Miss Baker then found out she was wrong when the handsome man greets his partner, who happens to be another man. The two men gave each other a kiss on the cheek.
However, the kiss between the gay couple turned out to be censored.
It turns out that originally, when Miss Bakes sees the handsome man, the man was supposed to give his date a bouquet of flowers and a kiss on the mouth to make it clear they are gay and not possibly just European, New Now Next reported.
One "Clarence" fan took to Twitter to ask the writer of the show, Spencer Rothbell.
"I seriously want to know if you guys had a fight with CN to get a gay couple there," the fan wrote, to which Rothbell replied, "yeah originally the guy had flowers and they kissed on the mouth."
But in order to get the approval from Cartoon Network to air the episode, the scene had to be changed.
"It's such a minor throwaway moment but I guess it's better than nothing. Maybe one day the main character can be gay and it won't be a big deal," Rothbell also pointed out.
