Smooth Jazz Christian Pianist Isha Love Shares About Her Vision Behind "Jars of Waters"
A classically trained pianist, Isha Love emerges on the music scene as a source of "living water." With her debut album "Jars of Waters," Isha hopes to share and spread ever-abundant love. The inspirational solo performances on the CD transcend genres, riding the waves of jazz, classical, gospel, worship and pop. Whether she is surfing across the keys, like a boogie board bouncing above the ocean or rafting quietly down the river's bank, tickling the ivories like a paddle propelling the current, her compositions shower light and shimmer with the presence of love.
Isha reveals that she only composes when she feels led by the Spirit. In fact, each track from "Jars of Waters" emerged from a series of compelling visions she believes God used to guide her musical journey. Song titles like "Rain On Me," "I've Got Peace Like A River," "There is a Fountain," "Living Water," and the title track "Jars of Waters" reveal her personal plunge to sacred depths.
We are so honored to be able to catch up with Isha Love for this exclusive Hallels' interview.
Hallels: You are a classically trained pianist, when and how did the Lord lead you to play music for Him?
When I started playing classical music I was too young to understand the connection between the music and the divinity yet, I still grew up playing hymns and christian music at different churches where I learned what it was like to be in God's presence. I loved the intimacy that I could enjoy when powerful worship songs were played. I loved to feel God's spirit flowing through the music, leading me into his perfect love and absolute peace. I remember around my high school years I started realizing music had become a part of me, and I knew I wanted to play for God. In the beginning it was more for selfish reasons. I just liked to feel that connection with God through the music which brought me in this peaceful and warm place filled with such love. Later on God gave me love for the people which gave me strong desires to share the love that I got from God with the people in the world. I would like to be a blessing to the people that I meet while I'm living in this world. Sharing God's love through my music is much more than what I can possibly give to anyone on my own.
Hallels: You have also performed with Kim Burrell, Andrea Crouch, Frank McComb and many others before, tell us a little bit more about how you got involved in playing with these great artists?
As I performed around town I come across many different musicians and artists at different venues and churches. I love to learn new things from playing with other people and to learn from their professionalism. Especially Andrae Crouch, he has been one of my main influences when it comes to the christian music. He taught me how to trust God despite of all the circumstances and how to give him praise through the music. It was a great experience to write and play with him.
Hallels: Congratulations on the release of your new album "Jars of Waters," I believe the album was birthed from a vision the Lord laid upon your heart. Can you tell us about that vision?
One day as I was praying I saw a large field with hundreds upon hundreds of empty jars. God stood at the beginning of the long line and was holding a pitcher. It contained water and God was pouring the water into the jars. He explained that the many jars represented the songs that I have within me, that are waiting to be filled - and told me that the water that fills the jars are His Spirit. During the vision, God explained that when the jars are filled with Living Water, each becomes a completed song anointed by Him. Each song is one of these 'jars of waters."
Hallels: How would you describe the musical style of "Jars of Waters"?
Most of the songs on this album were written to be smooth jazz songs, yet because these songs don't have drums and bass grove they have become a different style of music. Some people call it "new classical music" or "easy listening jazz" . I still would like to call it jazz as jazz seems to be the most broad term to describe instrumental music these days, LOL . Besides these songs are written on jazz harmony and chords. But they definitely have different influences from other music. Besides jazz these songs have a lot of gospel and classical elements as well. I listen to many different artists and style of music and analyze the main ingredients of each style of music; what makes the music sound like what, then mix up each ingredient extracted from all different style of music. Some of the harmonies and rhythms are driven from Caribbean, Irish and latin music wether or not you can believe it. : ) I'm a creative person. LOL
Hallels: You have included some originals together with some more familiar songs on the record, if you have to pick two of your favorite songs from "Jars of Waters" which would they be? And why?
My favorite song is "Jars of Waters". All of my songs portraits the visions and communications that I had with God in parts, but "Jars of Waters" is the only one song which is all about one particular vision from the top to bottom. Also it contains more stories than other songs. I saw thousands of jars, and imagine if you are hearing one story from each jar. That makes those jars tell you thousands of stories. : ) When I sneaked a peek inside of the jars I saw Jesus on his crucifixion day, I also saw Moses, John the baptist, and thousands of other people from the bible days. Music is another form of language. You can contain so many messages in the music, and I believe this particular song has so much to say to the listeners. My second favorite song is "Living Water". It is about when Jesus met Samaritan women at the well. (John 4).Jesus told the woman who was considered to be a social outcast and a sinner, that all her sins were forgiven, and he would give himself to her as a living water dwelling inside of her keeping her from being thirsty ever again. When we still are sinners he called us to be his own, not because we deserve his love and forgiveness but because he is so merciful and good. I find this song very comforting and soothing. I feel so much love of God flowing through this song.
