Jonathan Thulin Brings Out Life's Issues Through His Science Fiction-Inspired New Album
Jonathan Andreas Thulin is a Swedish recording artist and songwriter. He is best known for his two #1 hit singles "Dead Come to Life", featuring Australian artist Charmaine and "Architecture". He has been applauded for his creative approach to Christian music, through cinematic and theatrical recordings and music videos. His recently released music videos for "Bombs Away", featuring artist Rachael Lampa and "Dead Come to Life", were a success among critics and audiences alike.
He was a member of the chart topping band Press Play from 2010 - 2013. His solo albums "The Anatomy of a Heartflow" and "The White Room" were released on Dream Records, EMI CMG distribution. His new album "Science Fiction" is set to release in March, 2015 which features cameos from Royal Tailor, Group 1 Crew, Rapture Ruckus, Derek Minor, Kevin Max, Shine Bright Baby and Moriah Peters.
We are so honored to catch up with Jonathan for this exclusive Hallels' interview:
Hallels: Thank you so much Jonathan for your time. On your press release it says that "Science Fiction pushes his artistic passions along with his message of hope to a whole new level." In what ways do you think this new album pushes your artistic passions to the next level?
I think I really tried to think out of the box musically and creatively on this one. The whole is based around the themes of science fiction stories and terminology. It was an awesome process fitting in my life struggles into these themes.
Hallels: You have quite a number of guests making appearances on the new album. Can you tell us who some of them are?
Rapture Ruckus, Group 1 Crew, Derek Minor, Royal Tailor, Kevin Max, Shine Bright Baby and Moriah Peters! All friends and all people that added so much to this project! I love collaboration! You'll be seeing a lot more of that from me.
Hallels: I am so impressed by the title cut "Science Fiction." I don't think I have ever heard of Hans Solo being mentioned in a song before. What was the inspiration behind the song?
I actually wrote it for my wife. She turned my world upside down when I met her and think she is amazing! It's great to have songs that can have different meanings though. Cause this song can also be referenced to the fact that the love of God is something out of this world and can sometimes feel too good to be true.
Hallels: Another song that I thought was a creative gem was "Hat Trick," tell us how did the song come about?
I was thinking about the fact that there are certain issues that people don't want us as artists to deal with. We talk about unconditional love but only when we are comfortable with what the person is going through. I have had the feeling that people would rather not tell them who I really am because it would make them uncomfortable. So the song is talking about the frustration and the awful reality that we have created a society where we can't really say what's really going on because there is this huge pressure of upholding the standard of cultural Christianity. So we put on a show and hope that our magic trick is good enough to please the ever watching eye of the ones who can't accept you for who you really are. Heavy I know haha
Hallels: With the creativity of the sound and the lyrics, you must have spent a lot of time making this record. Did this record take a long time to make? What were the greatest joy and challenge in making "Science Fiction"?
It did, a year and a half. Not how I would have wanted it but because of personal struggles and a bunch of other factors it took its time, and I'm ok with that. I think it takes a while to really let songs saturate and make sure you are saying what you wanna say. I'm very proud of this record and hope that even after all of its challenges the underlining message of God's love will shine through.
Hallels: Has there been a single released off this new album yet? Tell us more about the single.
Yes, "Compass" one of my favorites from the record. An upbeat song about being lost, admitting it and finding our way back.
Hallels: I know besides your own work, you also write and produce for other artists too. Are there any projects you are also working on besides your own?
I've been writing a lot. With Royal Tailor, Rapture Ruckus, Shine Bright Baby for their own projects! I hope I get to write more with people! It's a very valuable experience for me to collaborate.
Hallels: For our readers who would like to read more about you or/and purchase "Science Fiction," where can they go?
iTunes or you can text "JT" to 51555 and I'll send you a direct link. And there are tons of interviews and lovely informative pieces like this one around the web :)
