Danen Kane Shares Details About His New Record "Flesh and Soul"
Following his previous project, "Love Is Waiting," singer and songwriter Danen Kane has just released his long awaited followup "Flesh and Soul." The self-produced album was recorded at Skyview Studio in Wisconsin and OceanWay Studio in Nashville, TN. Kane once again used Grammy Award winning engineer, Mills Logan (Taylor Swift, Luke Bryan, Matthew West), to partially record and fully mix Flesh and Soul, while featuring Grammy Award winning session musician, Jimmie Lee Sloas (Carrie Underwood, Keith Urban, Switchfoot), on bass guitar throughout the album. Flesh and Soul features ten new songs that were written by Kane and once again delivers a diverse collection of music that is inspiring, emotionally honest and filled with a hope that is pointed towards Christ.
Hallels: Congratulations on the release of your new album "Flesh and Soul." Why did you entitle the record "Flesh and Soul"?
The title "Flesh and Soul" is in reference to the battle that every Christian faces daily. The battle between living for ourselves, or living for God and others. It is in that tension, where our failures and longings meet, that we hopefully encounter the grace and person of Christ.
Hallels: Tell us a little about your background, how did you feel God's calling to sing?
I had a very non-traditional road to a career in music. I didn't do anything musical until I was 19 years old, and to that point, basketball was my main focus and love. It wasn't until my dreams of a future in basketball ended, that I even attempted anything with music . I actually learned guitar so I could participate in some dorm room worship times with my college ministry, and through that, soon found out I had some abilities and giftings I never knew were there.
Hallels: On this album you have got to work with some of music industry's greats such as Mills Logan (Taylor Swift, Luke Bryan, Matthew West) and Jimmie Lee Sloas (Carrie Underwood, Keith Urban, Switchfoot). What was it like working with them?
Working with both Jimmie and Mills was absolutely amazing. To see a of couple guys who have worked on some of the biggest albums ever made take an interest in me and my music was just incredibly humbling. The amount of creativity they brought to the project was unbelievable and legitimately exciting for me on a personal level. They are literally two of the best in the world at what they do, and working with them was an absolute honor.
Hallels: One song I have on repeat is "Love Song," I just love this song. What was the inspiration behind this song?
Well thank you very much, that means a lot to me. "Love Song" came from a realization that at the end of the day I have one desire, and that is to be loved. Not for what I look like, or for the talents I may have, or even for what I can offer another person. I desire to be loved simply for who I am, just as I am. The older I get the more I realize how tainted and conditional this world's "love" really is. And that the type of love that my heart was created to long for can only be fulfilled by Him. The One who literally is Love.
Hallels: You have also chosen to cover a hymn for this record. Why did you choose "Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing"?
Well I've adored that hymn for a long time now. I think what I love most about it, is it's honesty about the human condition. That we really are "prone to wander", "prone to leave the God we love". It speaks of our struggle and humanity, our fickle feelings and nature, and yet beautifully proclaims our hope in Christ and His rescue.
Hallels: Has there been a single chosen yet for the record? Can you tell us more about the single.
Picking the single is always one of my least favorite things to do. It's like choosing between your kids, or so I'm told, ha-ha. That being said, the single will be the song "No Words". It's really a song about trust and gratefulness. Will we trust that God's promises really are coming for us, even when we're walking through a season where He doesn't seem as real or near. Do we trust His will is perfect when we aren't where we want to be in life. And will we choose to worship when we feel like we have nothing left to give.
Hallels: With this album addressing issues dealing with sanctification, just briefly, what are some personal spiritual disciplines you have adopted in your own life in drawing yourself closer to the Lord each day?
For me it comes down to two things. One, do I start my day by reading my Bible and having my quiet time, and two, am I actively seeking out people to spend time with. For me, my spiritual life lives and dies by those two things. To me that makes sense since the two greatest commandments are to love God and love others. When the foundation of my day is created by spending time with Him first, and I'm focused more on others than I am on myself, my life reflects Him exponentially more.
Hallels: For our readers who would like to read up about you or purchase your new album, where can they go?
Probably the best place is my website www.danenkane.com. I will be posting videos, blogs, and updates there throughout the year as we tour. "Flesh and Soul" will also be available there, as well as iTunes, Amazon, and most digital online stores . I would be honored beyond words if people picked it up. As an indie, it really does help a ton in furthering the ministry and the mission behind what we do.
