Prince Covers Nicole Nordeman's "What If" (Listen Here)
Prince is a musician full of surprises. But he has up the ante with his latest single. Prince and 3rdEyeGirl released an electric guitar-heavy cover of Christian singer-songwriter Nichole Nordeman's "What If," a song that embraces the closely-knit relationship between doubt and faith.
"What If," originally appeared in Nordeman's 2005 album "Brave." She has won multiple GMA Dove Awards, including two awards for Female Vocalist of the Year. Her best-known songs include "Why", "This Mystery", "Holy", "Legacy", "Brave", and "What If". She also sang a song on the soundtrack Music Inspired by the Chronicles of Narnia, called "I Will Believe."
During 2006 and 2007, Nordeman wrote an editorial column for CCM Magazine called "Loose Ends . . . Confessions of an Unfinished Faith." She recorded the album "Brave" after giving birth to her son Charlie. Nordeman released the greatest hits album Recollection: The Best of Nichole Nordeman on March 6, 2007 featuring two new songs: "Sunrise" and "Finally Free."
Prince released the song to Louisville, KY, radio, where he's kicking off the U.S. portion of his Hit & Run Tour. That's the only date announced so far, but given the last-minute nature of the European Hit & Run Tour, expect the rest of his U.S. dates to pop up with short to no notice
Here are the lyrics to Nordeman's "What If:"
What if you're right?
And he was just another nice guy
What if you're right?
What if it's true?
They say the cross will only make a fool of you
And what if it's true?
What if he takes his place in history
With all the prophets and the kings
Who taught us love and came in peace
But then the story ends
What then?
But what if you're wrong?
What if there's more?
What if there's hope you never dreamed of hoping for?
What if you jump?
And just close your eyes?
What if the arms that catch you, catch you by surprise?
What if He's more than enough?
What if it's love?
What if you dig
Way down deeper than your simple-minded friends
What if you dig?
What if you find
A thousand more unanswered questions down inside
That's all you find?
What if you pick apart the logic
And begin to poke the holes
What if the crown of thorns is no more
Than folklore that must be told and retold?
You've been running as fast as you can
You've been looking for a place you can land for so long
But what if you're wrong?
