Plumb On Her Worship Record "Exhale:" "I Make Records Like Journals Being Put to Music"
Multi-genre recording artist, songwriter, and author PLUMB is finalizing her seventh studio album, titled EXHALE, for release May 4, 2015. EXHALE follows the tour-de-force success of her previous album NEED YOU NOW, an intense collection that coincided with the artist's personal struggle in her marriage up through her family's restoration. This story ultimately lead to the artist writing her memoir, titled 'Need You Now: A Story of Hope'. EXHALE is the resulting collection of songs filled with worship and thanksgiving, coupled with the distinctive sound for which Plumb is renowned.
Hallels: Once again thank you for doing this interview with us. Congratulations on the release of "Exhale." Why did you choose to do a worship album?
THANK YOU! TO BE HONEST, I DIDN'T NECESSARILY CHOOSE TO DO A 'WORSHIP RECORD' AS MUCH AS I MADE A RECORD IN RESPONSE TO WHERE I'M AT, AS I NORMALLY DO, LIKE A JOURNAL THAT COMES TO LIFE THROUGH MUSIC HOWEVER I'M IN SUCH A WORSHIPFUL PLACE THAT THE RECORD CAME OUT SOUNDING MORE LIKE A WORSHIP RECORD THAN A TYPICAL PLUMB RECORD BUT THAT'S BECAUSE OF THE TREMENDOUS HEART CHANGE THAT'S HAPPENED IN ME.WHEN I THINK OF WORSHIP RECORDS I THINK OF HILLSONG AND PASSION...AND LOVE THOSE...HOWEVER THIS RECORD IS SIMPLY A PLUMB RECORD...BUT THE PLACE THAT I AM AT IS INCREDIBLY DIFFERENT.
Hallels: Your last album was very successful especially the hit song "Need You Now." Did you feel the pressure when you were making this album?
NO. I'VE NEVER FELT 'PRESSURE' IN THAT WAY. THAT TAKES SO MUCH JOY OUT OF MAKING ART. I'VE BEEN FORTUNATE TO NEVER HAVE TO REALLY FEEL THAT AND WHAT PRESSURE I HAVE EXPERIENCED HAS BEEN MORE ABOUT A TIME LINE...A DEADLINE...BUT I HAVE LEARNED THAT I ACTUALLY DO BETTER WORK UNDER THAT KIND OF PRESSURE.
Hallels: Comparing with your last record, did you approach the writing or singing of "Exhale" any differently?
NO. AGAIN, I MAKE RECORDS LIKE JOURNALS BEING PUT TO MUSIC...RESPONSES TO WHERE I AM AT, AT THAT TIME...HOWEVER ONE THING I DID DO DIFFERENTLY WAS CARE LESS ABOUT RADIO AND REMIXES/EDM AND FILM AND TV...OUTLETS I'VE BEEN SO THANKFUL TO SHARE MY MUSIC IN BUT HAD IN THE PAST BEEN MORE CAUGHT UP IN HOW WELL THEY WOULD DO THERE AND WITH THIS ALBUM I WAS FREE FROM THAT CONCERN AND WAS ABLE TO JUST MAKE A RECORD THAT HONORED WHAT GOD DID IN MY LIFE AND MAKE IT FOR HIM AND TRUST HIM TO DO WITH IT WHAT HE WANTS...HE DID AN ABSOLUTE MIRACLE IN MY LIFE BY REDEEMING MY ONCE VERY BROKEN MARRIAGE AND HOME AND HEART AND LIFE AND MADE IT NEW AGAIN, BETTER THAN BEFORE...THIS IS A 2ND CHANCE AND I DON'T WANNA WASTE IT.
Hallels: Who did you work with for this new record?
AS ALWAYS, MY LONG TIME PRODUCER AND FRIEND, MATT BRONLEEWE.
Hallels: You have just released a new song "Smoke." Can you tell us more about it? What was the inspiration of this song?
INSPIRED BY JAMES 1:19..."BE SLOW TO SPEAK AND QUICK TO LISTEN..." MY LIFE HAD CRASHED AND BURNED...MY MARRIAGE WAS DEAD...MY LIFE SEEMED TO HAVE GONE UP IN FLAMES...AND IN THE SMOKE AND ASH OF WHAT WAS LEFT...GOD REDEEMED. UNBREATHABLE SMOKE WAS TURNED INTO OXYGEN AND THAT WORTHLESS ASH, GOD MADE BEAUTY FROM IT. IN THAT VERSE, I HEARD GOD SO TENDERLY IN THE NICEST WAY TELL ME TO JUST SHUT UP AND LISTEN. AND WHAT I HEARD WAS THAT THERE WAS HOPE. AND IT WAS IN HIM. AND IN ALL OF THE BROKENESS OF MY LIFE...HE WAS MY SHELTER WHEN IT ALL WENT UP IN SMOKE...AND PROVED HIMSELF TRUE.
Hallels: With the release of your book where you talked about the demise of your marriage, how has that and the healing process deepen you in your songwriting prowess?
IT'S CHANGED EVERYTHING. I HAVE BEEN FREED FROM ALOT OF FEAR AND GUILT. I HAVE BEEN MADE NEW IN EVERY WAY...WOMAN, WIFE, MOTHER, ARTIST, CHRISTIAN...AND THAT NEWNESS HAS AFFECTED EVER AREA OF MY LIFE, INCLUDING MY ART. ITS MADE ME MORE INTENTIONAL ABOUT BEING TRUE TO WHO GOD CREATED ME TO BE AND NOT WHO I THOUGHT I WAS OR WANTED TO BE.
Hallels: Are you touring in support of "Exhale"? Where can our readers find out about your tour dates and more updates from you?
