Lindsay Graham On Her New Album "Break Free" & Her Ministry to Women
Lindsay Graham is a singer/songwriter from Lancaster, Pennsylvania. After going through many life changing experiences, Lindsay re-committed her life to God and began to focus on living her life for His glory. She has just released her debut album "Break Free".
Along with her debut album, Lindsay has also started a ministry called "Break Free Music Ministry". Break Free Music Ministry was born when Lindsay wrote the title track to her album, "Break Free". The ministry focuses on 13 to 30 year-old girls and through her testimony, bible teaching and worship Lindsay helps them to focus on how they can break free from their sins and cling to Christ. This is normally done in a retreat type setting but can also be done in an intense evening study.
Hallels: Lindsay thanks for doing this interview with us. Let's start from the beginning, how did you come to know Jesus?
First, let me say how honored I am to be able to share my story with you and your readers. It wasn't long ago when I thought that there was no way that God could take my "mess of a life" and transform it for His glory, but His mercy and grace continue to amaze me and I hope that by reading this, someone might come to realize, just as I did, that God is so much bigger than all of our "mess"!
I accepted Christ as my savior at the very young age of four. While I'm sure that my heart was sincere, I was still a naive child and didn't yet understand that making Christ my savior (while it would get me to heaven) wasn't enough; I also had to make him Lord over my life. High school and college brought many challenges my way, and instead of relying on Christ to see me through those trials, I began looking to the world for answers and guidance.
My breaking point came when I was at my lowest. I had searched the world high and low to find my joy, but there I was, alone, broken-hearted and ready to give up on life. It was in that place that I dropped to my knees. It was then that I realized that true joy would only come from complete surrender. So, I gave myself over to the One who is joy. I offered my life to Him and began living it out day by day. Yes, there have been struggles since then, but I never lose hope because I know that God is in control and through Him I have victory!
Hallels: You have a ministry for women called "Break Free Music Ministry." What is the ministry about? And how did the ministry start?
"Break Free Music Ministry" is about exactly what the name says. Sometimes in life we allow our sins to hold us down. It's almost as if we're in chains, and that is precisely what the devil wants. The more tied down we are by our shame and regret, the less effective we are for the kingdom of God. "Break Free Music Ministry" was designed to help women break free from those chains so they can become the awesome, beautiful, smart and talented disciples God had called them to be.
Hallels: Let's talk about your new album "Break Free." How would you describe the style of your music?
"Break Free" was truly a labor of love. It was filled with many 2 a.m. writing sessions, tear stained chord sheets and brokenness, but in the end I couldn't see it coming together in any other way. I believe that the honest love and brokenness of these songs can be heard on the album. I hope that you will hear my heart in each song, but more importantly I hope that you will hear the message of God's love, mercy and grace.
Hallels: Did you write all the songs on this record? Does songwriting come easy for you?
All of the songs on the "Break Free" album were inspired by personal experiences, but I give my song writing credit up to the Lord. I grew up singing in church, but I never considered myself to be a song writer. It wasn't until about three years ago when I fully accepted God's invitation into music ministry that He began putting songs together in my head. I carried a notebook around everywhere I went and I still do because I want to be ready to write when He is ready to share.
Hallels: In your bio you said this album touches on real life issues that people struggle with. What issues are addressed on this new album? And how can these songs speak to people's lives and situations?
The "Break Free" album touches on so many issues that women deal with these days such as self-worth, bullying (yes, this affects adults too!), fear, heartache and body-image. That may seem like enough, but this album also touches on some taboo issues that can be serious problems for young women, but are not usually addressed in Christian environments, let alone music, such as sexual temptation, self-harm and suicide (but don't think the album is all serious; there are several fun and upbeat songs on there too!).
My desire is that by listening to these songs, women that are struggling with the same things that I struggled with will find a source of hope and strength in Jesus Christ.
Hallels: Can you give us an example of how the songs on this new record have helped you personally?
I experienced a lot of healing through writing these songs. My testimony song called "Your Love Is Enough" (#10 on the album) is especially meaningful to me. This was the first song I wrote and it touched on my biggest struggle in my teen and early young adult years, sexual sin. I spent MANY nights in my basement just singing this song and crying. At first I was crying in brokenness, but the more I sang it the less it became about brokenness and the more it became about gratefulness. Not only was I grateful that God had brought me from that place of darkness and given me a song of healing, but I was grateful that He was giving me the opportunity to share it with others in hopes that they might also find healing.
Hallels: Looking at your website and your blog, I can sense you have a passion to help troubled women. What advice do you have to give to our readers who are struggling with depression and discouragements?
I would share with them that hope and joy can only be found through completely surrendering your life to Jesus Christ. This is the only way to truly rid your life of depression and discouragement. It doesn't mean that you will never again face trials, but when the trials do appear you know that you have the almighty conqueror on your side and He has never and will never abandon you.
I would also encourage them to step out and share their stories with those around them. I never knew how many people struggled with the same things that I did until I began sharing my story. So many women since then have shared with me their similar experiences, and when we learn about and share with each other we are able to support one another and lift each other up in Christ.
