Hallels: Thanks for doing this interview with us. Prior to your Christian release, you were fronting a rock group called "A Current Affair." Tell us more about the kind of music you used to make.
Of course! I'mhappy to be able to share a bit of my background with you. A Current Affair was a band that I became a part of during my senior year in high school. We were writing really heavy metal music with faith based lyrical content. Our goal as a band was to be a light in the darkness and show people the love of Christ.
Hallels: Why then did you decide to record a Christian album?
I decided to start pursuing Christian music the year after A Current Affair broke up. I had been leading worship at a church and really felt like God had laid the desire in my heart to create music that would speak the love of God and show the world that Jesus is the only true satisfaction in this life.
Hallels: Is the recording and writing process of "Beloved" different or similiar to the making a rock album?
It really is very different! Every record that I have created has its certain challenges, but thisproject flowed so easily. It was the first time I had been a part of creating music that really felt like me.
Hallels: Tell us more about the album's lead single "The River." What was the inspiration behind this song?
'The River' stems from John 7:38: Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them. The song is truly an invitation to everyone. To the person who feels they have lived their life by the book, or to the person who feels they have so much baggage and are ashamed to take it to Jesus. It's the opportunity to go down in amazing grace and to rise up, being made new.
Hallels: I believe the title cut "Beloved" was written for your daughter. Tell us a little about your family and why you decide to write a song for your daughter.
My wife and I met when we were both 15 years old and dated long distance for the first four and a half years. When she turned 20 she moved to California, a year later we were engaged and a year after that we were married. We had a beautiful little girl named Jolie nine weeks ago and she has completely rocked our world. I did write the title track for Jolie. After realizing that we were having a little girl I kept thinking about how much I was gonna love her, but the thought of what the world was gonna tell her kept coming to mind also. Things like 'you're not pretty enough,' or 'you're not skinny enough.' The list goes on and on. I wanted to write her a song that let her know no matter what this world tells her, she is loved not only by me, but by the savior of the world. Now that I understand the love a father feels for his child, I have found a whole new respect for God's love for us. So even though 'Beloved' is written for Jolie, it holds meaning for the way Christ feels about us!
Hallels: I absolutely love your cover of NEEDTOBREATHE's "Brother" which is also on "Beloved." What inspired to offer your own version of this #1 hit?
The short and sweet of it is that I LOVE the song too! When I was asked about songs that I would like to cover, that was the first that came to mind. I could completely feel the message of the song to the core. It was truly an honor to create my own take of the song.
