Bishop Leonard Scott Opens Up About His Daughter's Illness, His New Album & Being Tyscot Music's President
Bishop Leonard Scott has just released his new album "The Greatness of Your Love." Inspired by his daughter's miraculous recovery from a diagnosis then deemed fatal, Dr. Scott testifies to God's power to turn tragedy to triumph on eleven tracks of ebullient Gospel worship. Includes "God's Spirit," "Under The Sun," the title track, and more.
Dr. Scott is the pastor of Rock Community Church. He started his music career, in 1989, with Tyscot Records releasing Holy, and they have released all of his albums. Scott has released eleven albums with three of those charting on the Billboard magazine Gospel Albums chart.
Hallels: Bishop Scott, thank you for doing this interview with us. Your new album "Greatness of Your Love" is more than just an album, but it is a testimony of healing of your daughter. Tell us more about what happened to your daughter.
Dr. Scott: In January, 2013, our daughter Melanie was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia, an aggressive form of leukemia that could not be cured through regular chemotherapy and radiation treatments. She had never been seriously ill, and this shook our family's world. Short of a direct miracle from God, she had to have a bone marrow transplant to survive. None of Melanie's siblings or family members were a match for her so we had to go to the Be the Match national bone marrow registry. There was no adult donor match for her at the registry, but in June of 2013 a baby was born, the mother donated the umbilical cord, and it was a match for Melanie. By the grace of God she had the life-saving transplant in July, 2013. The journey was not over though because after the transplant there were multiple complications. It is tough to watch your child fight to live. There were times when my faith was shaken and it seemed like she might not make it. But God brought her through and I was able to walk her down the aisle last year (2014) as she married a great young man who stuck with her throughout the entire process.
Hallels: What then would you say is (are) the major lesson(s) you hope to convey through your new album?
Dr. Scott: Have faith in God, and hold on to your faith in Him. No matter what happens, remain confident that you will see the goodness and greatness of the Lord. God is still in the miracle working business, and regardless of how big your problem is, God's love is greater. He has anointed us for miracles for such a time as this.
Hallels: I believe you are also donating the proceeds of this record to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS). Why did you decide to do that?
Dr. Scott: I am both a Christian minister and a medical doctor (dentist), so I believe in God's healing power as well as supporting medical advances. LLS funds much of the research for finding cures for blood related cancers. The cord blood transplant is a new procedure developed with funds from LSS by Dr. Hal Broxmeyer at the Indiana University Simon Cancer Center. God used this procedure to save my daughter's life. There are other procedures and cures yet to be discovered that will save someone else. The goal of LSS is to totally eradicate death from blood cancers. I continue to support this effort so other Dads can walk their daughters down the aisle one day.
Hallels: Let's talk about the single "God's Spirit." What is the song about?
Dr. Scott: "God's Spirit" is the mission statement of Jesus when He exercised His earthly ministry. Following His baptism by John the Baptist, and His temptation by the devil in the wilderness, He went to the synagogue where He is handed the Scripture. He opens to Isaiah 61 and begins to read. When He finishes He hands the book back to the minister and tells them that day the Scripture is fulfilled in their ears. There is so much powerful truth and revelation in this Scripture and song. Jesus is declaring that He is the Messiah or Anointed One, and what He is anointed to do. When He rose from the dead He sent His Holy Spirit to assist us in doing the works that He did. Now His mission statement becomes our mission statement. The song says He has anointed us to preach the gospel, mend the broken hearted, tell the captive soul there's liberty. We need to get this message in our spirit to carry out the mission of our Savior in these last days. (Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VzyMCRKOhe8 )
Hallels: You have also covered Andrae Crouch's "My Tribute." Why did you choose to do this classic?
Dr. Scott: I am a staunch proponent for the hymns of the church. I love the new songs, God told us to sing new songs. But He did not tell us to stop singing the old songs. Some songs are for a season, some are for a lifetime, but some are timeless. "My Tribute" is one of those timeless songs that is just as relevant today as it was over 40 years ago when it was written. It still carries an anointing and message that testifies to the greatness of God's love. This next generation needs to be impacted by the message and spirit of this classic song.
Hallels: Being the founder and president of Tyscot Music, what is your vision for this imprint?
Dr. Scott: Tyscot Music and Entertainment is a family run business with a focus on positive music, film and entertainment that is inspirational and motivational for the entire family. With a dynamic team and some of the world's greatest talent, our vision is to continue to proclaim the good news of Jesus Christ to the church and the world. We endeavor to glorify God, edify the believer and evangelize the lost through our products and the ministries we support.
Hallels: With Tyscot Music, what are some of the new projects lined up to be released this year and next that we can look forward to?
Dr. Scott: We are excited about our newest artist, Bri (Briana Babineaux) whose project will be out soon. Projects that are in the plans include Ruth La'Ontra, Casey J, Tiff Joy and a follow up to the blockbuster "Everyday Jesus" by Anthony Brown and Group Therapy. We are also anticipating the release of our latest movie "Switching Lanes" (trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1KzV-dTc8Ls).
Hallels: Speaking of sickness, there may be some of our readers who are struggling in their illnesses, what word of faith and encouragement do you have for them?
Dr. Scott: Always remember that Jesus shed His precious blood for our healing. Never give up hope. It's not over until God says it's over. Remain confident in the God Who is able to work miracles, and Who manifests His power through wonders of the greatness of His love.
