Deitrick Haddon Address the Issue of Violence with New Single "Under Control"
Deitrick Haddon not only has a #1 Billboard Gospel album with Masterpiece, but he's set out to change our world of violence with Christ's love. His new single "Under Control" addresses this issue of violence in our society. "Under Control" is one of the 16 new cuts on Haddon's Masterpiece.
"With everything in our culture right now - the police brutality, the massacres, so much going on - we need that inspiration," the gospel star says of his song "Under Control."
"When I was recording my new album, I said I need something that will speak to our culture and our generation, that will help people press forward even through the tough situations. I had this song I was singing in my heart for a year or two: 'God has everything under control,'" he says. "When I had the opportunity to record this album, "I had to sing it."
Deitrick Haddon's Masterpiece opens at No. 1 on Top Gospel Albums with 9,000 first-week copies sold. Fueled by single "Restore Me Again," which cracks the top 10 on Gospel Airplay (11-9) and lifts 16-12 on Hot Gospel Songs, Masterpieceis Haddon's sixth No. 1 on Top Gospel Albums (and 18th appearance dating to his first in 1998).
"Masterpiece," mixed and mastered at Dearborn's Studio A, is something of a statement record for Haddon, following a highly publicized 2011 divorce, remarriage and move to Los Angeles. He wrote more than 40 songs before settling on the album's final selection.
"I'm telling people life is full of ups and down, victories and failures, joys and pains, good and ugly, and someday it's all going to come to something beautiful," says the father of three. "Sometimes we don't understand. Sometimes it's to develop us or to focus us. But it's all for a reason. That's why I chose this title: When I look at my life and how far I've come, I have to say it's a masterpiece. I'm blessed through it all."
Haddon launched his solo career as a Christian R&B vocalist with the Lost & Found on Tyscot/Verity in 2002. The set peaked at #1 on Billboard's Top Gospel Charts and received wide critical acclaim and spawned the hit "Sinner's Prayer" which received heavy spins on gospel and mainstream R&B radio stations.
The 70's-leaning Crossroads followed in 2004, led off by the upbeat single "God Is Good". In an uncharacteristic move for marketing a gospel album, Detrick made an appearance on the long-running syndicated series Soul Train performing the single as well as the title track from the album. Haddon appeared to be pushing his Gospel artistry further into the ranks of mainstream venues with 7 Days, released October 10, 2006. 7 Days was produced almost entirely by R&B producers Tim & Bob. Balancing out the contemporary bulk of the album is the traditional gospel flavored lead single "Heaven Knows" which Deitrick produced himself.
On September 2, 2008, Deitrick Haddon released another album called Revealed. This album includes the popular single, "Love Him Like I Do" (featuring Mary Mary and Ruben Studdard). On July 27, 2010 Haddon made his film debut in a movie released directly to DVD called "Blessed and Cursed." On January 25, 2011 Deitrick Haddon released the much anticipated Church On The Moon, his fifth album with Verity Records. The album debuted at #1 on the Billboards Top Gospel charts and #65 on the Billboard 200.
Haddon is currently part of the cast of the reality television show Preachers of L.A., which chronicles the lives of six Los Angeles preachers, including Haddon. The show began airing on October 9, 2013 and currently airs on the Oxygen network in the United States.
