Watch The Voice's Jordan Smith Sing "Mary Did You Know"
On NBC Season 9 the Voice's Jordan Smith sang "Mary Did You Know," a song so befitting of Smith's Christian faith. "Mary Did You Know" was by comedian and Christian writer Mark Lowry and Buddy Greene, a ballad that questions if Mary knew the baby she was nursing in her arms was actually the Son of God.
When Smith sang the worship ballad, he had everyone glued to the screen. Here's the judge reaction and comments about this performance: Pharrell Williams said the people were ready for him to make a record when the cheers did not stop. He hoped Smith would end up on a label that really understands what made America fall in love with him.
Adam Levine continued by confessing he'd never heard this song and song was not his choice. Nevertheless, he felt that Smith is an artist with a vision. He was happy that he let Jordan Smith changed his song because it was the right choice. Smith wanted would not have sounded as good otherwise.
"Great Is Thy Faithfulness", during week two of the live shows, charted on the Billboard magazine charts, where it placed at No. 30 on The Billboard Hot 100, and was No. 1 on the Christian Songs chart for 2 weeks straight before Smith again entered at No.1 with his new song of, "Hallelujah".On the November 30, 2015 Billboard Hot 100 chart, Smith entered at No. 61 with his cover of "Hallelujah". "Hallelujah" debuted at No. 1 on the Hot Christian Songs chart on the November 30, 2015.
On December 8, 2015, Smith sang Somebody To Love by Queen and took the lead off of "Hello" by Adele on the iTunes overall chart.
"Mary Did You Know" was originally recorded by Christian recording artist, Michael English on his solo debut album in 1991 (English and Lowry were both members of the Gaither Vocal Band). Lowry would record the song several times himself, most notably with the Gaither Vocal Band on their 1998 Christmas album.
The song has since gone on to become a modern Christmas classic, being recorded by many artists over the years across multiple genres.Hayley Westenra recorded the song on her second album, My Gift to You, released in New Zealand and Australia, by Universal New Zealand label in 2001. Producer James Hall called it her "most perceptive" song choice for the album.
The song was also included as a bonus song on a special UK version of her first international album, Pure, in 2003, as well as the New Zealand version of her greatest hits album, River of Dreams: The Very Best of Hayley Westenra, in 2008. Westenra also performed the song for her PBS Great Performances special, Live from New Zealand, which aired in 2004, and was released on DVD in 2005.
A duet version recorded by Wynonna Judd and Kenny Rogers peaked at No. 55 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles & Trackscharts in 1997.
"Mary, Did You Know?" is the sixth track on Pentatonix's second Christmas album, That's Christmas to Me. The song both debuted and peaked at No. 26 on the weekly Billboard Hot 100 chart for the week ending December 6, 2014.
