Curt Anderson Speaks of His New Album: "I Hope It Speaks the Love and Grace of Christ to People"

Curt Anderson has been making music since he could first reach the piano keys and realized early on that he was destined for a career in music. Fast forward a couple decades and Curt is knocking out 120 shows a year across the US, Australia, and New Zealand.

For his label-debut album, Curt is teaming up with Grammy and Dove Award winning songwriters who have penned songs with everyone from Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Selena Gomez, Natasha Bedingfield, Backstreet Boys, and *NSYNC to Chris Tomlin, Casting Crowns, Hillsong, and TobyMac to bring listeners a fresh collection of anthemic songs that will both encourage and challenge. His work can be heard on other artist's albums, including a song called Different on former Superchick lead Tricia Brock's newest release and Our God is Able with Satellites & Sirens.

Hallels:  Curt, congratulations on the release of your new album.  What are your hopes for this new album?  How do you hope this album will help Christians and non-Christians in their daily lives?

Thanks! After working on it for so long-from writing, to demoing, to recording-it's almost surreal that it'll actually be out in the wild for people to hear. My hopes for this album are two-fold: I hope it speaks the love and grace of Christ to people. That no matter what situation or point in life you find yourself in, from the best highs to the worst lows to complete indifference, that God isn't waiting for our perfection. He wants us to come to him as we are. And I hope it gets people excited to go out and live every moment with purpose and joy. The other side of my hope for this record...I hope it makes back the money that it cost to make it, haha. Is that a bit too much to ask? Haha-honestly, I hope this album is the beginning of a long, creative, respectable career.

Hallels:  Let's take a step back, tell us a little about your upbringing and how you came to know Jesus? 

I grew up in a Christian home, so I've been aware of God's hand in my life for as long as I can remember. In addition to my family, I had key people come into my life right when I needed them who further modeled Christ to me. Not just spoke about God, but showed me through their actions who he is and how he loves. 

Hallels:  Seeing a piano in the front of your new CD, I guess the piano was your first instrument into music?  

From the moment I could stand up and reach the piano keys, I was hitting away at them. My mom's side of the family was very musical; my great grandpa was an organist in church and great piano player, my grandma was a church organist and taught piano lessons, my mom played piano...so yeah, the piano was always around. But my very first instrument was probably my chest, haha. I still drum on myself (and everything else around me) all the time. It may or may not drive my family nuts.

Hallels:  Is "Every Moment" your first record?  And how did you get to work with the lovely folks at Dream Records? 

"Every Moment" is my first proper record. I released an EP a few years ago and some earlier things when I was in college...and there was that CD I made and sold to friends in high school that paid for my junior year prom. But hopefully everyone who bought that way back then have lost (or burned) it. So yep, "Every Moment" is the first proper record.

Hallels:  For our readers who have not heard your new single "Keep It Beating," tell us more about this song?

"Keep it Beating" is a picture of how God takes our messes, our failures, our doubt, and makes something beautiful out of it. Yeah, we don't deserve all the chances that God gives us, but he doesn't give up on us even when we feel like we're shipwrecked out in deep water where we can't see God at work in our situations.

Hallels:  What were some of the blessings and challenges in the making of this new record?

I am honored to have worked with so many incredible people on this record. So many great songwriters who invested their time with no guarantee of any payoff, my incredible producer Pete Stewart who was in tune to my vision and worked hard to help bring it to life, and the stellar musicians who were involved. I'm thankful for all of the people who poured into this album with me. The challenges started, really, the last week or two of tracking the record. When you invest so much time, energy, money, and life in 12 songs that you're then going to put out into the world in hopes of it both impacting people and allowing you to support your family, it's scary. It's vulnerable. Right now, I'm learning a new level of trusting God...and I'd be lying if I said it was an easy lesson every day. 

Hallels:  If there's a song you want to be remembered for on the new record, which would it be?  

Love Like You Love. I mean, it IS the song about how I want to be remembered. At the end of the day, when the lights have faded, I want to be known as a person who has my eyes open to what's going on around me and someone who loves every person I meet unconditionally.
