Gary Smalley, Author of Many Books on Christian Relationships, Has Died
Known for his books on Christian relationships, author and speaker Gary Smalley passed away on Sunday. He was 75 years-old. Smalley wrote more than 60 books on relationships and worked closely with Focus on the Family.
"It is with heavy hearts that we announce Dr Gary Smalley, at age 75, graduated to heaven last night," stated his Facebook page. "The family gathered and surrounded him, his loving wife Norma kissed his forehead gently and sang to him. This beautiful transition came to an end as these words were spoke over him 'The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you (Numbers 6:24-25).'"
In 1979, Gary and Norma Smalley started an organization focused on helping families. After the formation of a board, they launched the CMI organization out of Waco, Texas. A few years later they moved to Phoenix, Arizona. Gary co-authored two books with Steve Scott during that time titled, If Only He Knew and For Better or For Best. In 1985 the organization was renamed Today's Family.
In 1988, Gary partnered with American Telecast's Steve Scott and they launched a nationwide infomercial with Dick Clark as the host of a half-hour television program. That infomercial was re-introduced in 1990 and 1992 through John Tesh and Connie Sellecca and then Frank and Kathie Lee Gifford.
The Blessing and The Two Sides of Love won the Gold Medallion Award for excellence in literature. The Language of Love won the Angel Award as the best contribution to family life.[citation needed]
Gary Smalley appeared on national televisions programs such as "The Oprah Winfrey Show", "Larry King Live", "Extra", "NBC Today Show" as well as numerous national radio programs.
"Gary was also a trusted counselor in whom people confided their deepest longings, hurts, hopes and dreams," wrote Focus president Jim Daly in tribute. "The practical advice and coaching he gave helped countless husbands and wives stave off divorce. How many children grew up with both their mom and their dad because God used Gary to repair and restore their marriages? More than you would imagine."
Gary and his wife, Norma, lived in Branson, Missouri. They have one daughter, and two sons.
The Smalley family also posted their gratitude for the "outpouring of love and support " on his facebook page.
Arrangements for the memorial service are being handled by the Smalley family.
