Lecrae Receives Honorary Doctorate Degree
Christian hip hop artist Lecrae was given an Honorary Doctorate of Music degree by the Canada Christian College. At age 36, Lecrae is the youngest recipient of the degree.
"His talents are amazing, as are his achievements," president Dr. Charles McVety of the college said. "But even more important is his outreach to troubled youth."
In a letter to Mayor John Tory and police Chief Mark Saunders, McVety writes: "Lecrae was raised by a single mother and he never met his father. He was lost in the inner city of Houston taking drugs and reportedly dealing heroin. God dramatically turned his life around from the ghetto to the pinnacle of success. Now Lecrae wants the same for others as he is taking his message of hope and fatherhood to inner city youth."
In Lecrae's case, it was a bible from his grandmother that helped save him. Whenever he was out on the streets with the drugs, guns and gangsters, he always had the good book with him. When he was arrested, a police officer noticed it and challenged him to follow it.
His Higher Learning tour will stop at Canada Christian College on Gervais Dr. on Monday night. Before the show, at 7 p.m., there will be a ceremony to turn Lecrae, 36, into Dr. Lecrae Devaughn Moore.
"Over the college's 50-year history, it has bestowed honorary degrees to notable leaders such as the Hon. Jim Flaherty, lieutenant-governor David Onley, Rev. Franklin Graham and now Lecrae, who will be the youngest recipient of such a degree," a proud Dr. McVety said.
