19 Year-Old J Vessel Releases "For My City" Video
"For My City" is the new single from the debut album, Reflections, from 19 yr old Londoner, J Vessel. Coming off of the back of a 2014 that saw J Vessel become the youngest ever independent solo act to be nominated for a MOBO Award and a UMA Award in the same year at just 17 years of age, J Vessel is gearing up for his debut EP, expected to be his biggest release yet.
"For My City is a song written for my ends: London Town. 'The land where rain falls in abundance' has seen its fair share of heartache as well as good times. In the song I talk about how we as young people can make a positive change in our communities no matter our age or background," J Vessel shares.
Whether he's on stage bringing an audience to its feet or off stage fielding interview questions with a potent combination of intellect and wit, it's obvious J Vessel is a born communicator with music his instrument.
"It is absolutely undeniable that music is an universal language," Vessel says expressing an unbridled enthusiasm for his artistic vehicle. "It's so influential because you are able to say so much in such a short period of time. When you stand behind that microphone you have the freedom to say whatever you want. You hold the key. Your words can either bring freedom or bondage for the listener. You have a unique opportunity to give somebody hope. You represent exactly what is deepest and dearest to you and people respond to that. They respond to that realness."
A native of London, England, J Vessel grew up a troubled kid who was kicked out of public school because of his cheeky remarks and mischievous behaviour. Sports and music became positive outlets for his excessive energy. "I was more involved in football, playing for Fulham FC academy until I discovered an application called Garage Band on my Dad's computer" he remembers. "It started off as just beats, until I found out that you could record on there too! I recorded my first song 'Drunk in the Spirit' with and old microphone and one of my mum's head scarves for a pop shield and the rest is history!"
Vessel with help from his parents gradually built a studio in his house where he recorded his raps and worked on his craft.
"Growing up the son of a Christian DJ, all I knew was gospel music until about 13 years old and this included gospel rap. So when it came time for everyone to write their favourite rapper down in year 7 and everyone was writing Jay Z and N Dubz but I was writing Guvna B and Lecrae! From early on, subconsciously, I was taught a different perspective on life through music and so when I started writing, positive vibes is what naturally came out!"
J Vessel, originally under the name 'JAM Productions' would occasionally get the opportunity to perform at open mic events his Dad would DJ at fuelling his passion and love for music. He recorded a song called 'I'm a Vessel' which would prove to be a crowd pleaser as he began making a name for himself. Soon other more established artists were enlisting J Vessel to add his considerable skills to their projects, with features on Ekklesia's "Happy", Guvna B's "Next Ting 140," and more.
"I remember finding out Guv wanted to work with me," he says of working with Guvna B. "He sent me a message on Facebook after a friend of his had recommended he get at me after seeing me shut down a show in Birmingham. I sprinted down stairs like 'Mum, Dad, Guvna B wants me on his album!'."
After releasing I'm A Vessel and working with some of his favourite artists, J Vessel released 'Amazing Love' which opened the door for him to perform at the biggest christian music festival in Europe "Big Church Day Out" as well as NewDay and others. The song and infamous accompanying video set in his secondary school went on to gain him MOBO and UMA Award nominations in the same year (2014) making him the youngest artist to ever achieve such at just 17 years of age.
Now 18 and making great strides in the right direction, he has already been labelled 'the future of UK urban music' from music fans as well as some of his musical heroes such as Guvna B.
