Rusty Watson Shares His Passion Behind His New Single & Ministry
Rusty Watson is known for his work as vocal director with Bishop Walter Hawkins' Love Center Choir and for penning For My Good on the choir's Grammy nominated Love Alive V disc. The St. Louis native who now resides in Oakland, California begins a new chapter with the long awaited release of his solo debut single, God hitting digital retail outlets on August 5th. The track serves as the first single from Watson's forthcoming CD The Right Time.
Q: Thank you Rusty for your time. Congratulations on the release of your new single "God." For our readers who have not heard it yet, what's the song about? And what's the story behind this song?
A: Thank you for the opportunity. The title of the song is self explanatory. "God" the song is about our great GOD !! It could be a response to the hymn How Great Thou Art. I was inspired to write a song that is about the God we serve. His "who-ness" ( I know I made that word up) but really that is how it came to be.
Q: "God" is the lead single from your new album "The Right Time." Did you write all the songs on this new album? What are a couple of songs you are really excited about now from the album and why?
A: I wrote about 2/3 's of the songs on the project. There are a couple of songs I'm very excited about because of their message content. But you have to wait for the CD (smile). God does everything in his time, the right time, and our job is to trust him and as Dr. Charles Stanley often reminds us, leave the consequences to Him.
Q: Who did you work with (in terms of producers, co-writers and singers) on this new record?
A: I am the executive producer of the project and I used a lot of the young incredible talent in the Bay Area which is home for me these last 25 years. The list of gifted singers and musicians is too long for this space. LOL
Q: Being a songwriter who has written for many Gospel artists, what are some essential qualities a good Gospel song needs to have?
A: Uhhhhh...lol... Welllll... I think, maybe, a message that is relatable and a melody that people will hum. People always look for a hook, but its so important for music to have a message, especially music that honors and reverences God.
Q: You also serve as the vocal director with Bishop Walter Hawkins' Love Center Choir. How did God lead you to this calling? And what do you enjoy most about what you do as a vocal director?
A: It was God ordained. Bishop Hawkins prophesied to me 28 years ago about the ministry here in Oakland and I obeyed and here I am. I love seeing the light of revelation go off in peoples faces when they get the message and method of vocals being taught to the point where they are able to execute every time a song is performed
Q: When I was reading your bio, it says that you sang backing vocals for many great artists including the late Natalie Cole, Stephanie Mills and Bebe Winans. But I didn't know you also sang backings for New Kids on the Block! How did end up working with them and what songs did you sing with them?
A: That's another interview..............How much time do we have...lol...
Q: Speaking of your new single "God," what does God mean to you personally?
A: EVERYTHING !!! In Him, we live, move and have our being. Without Him, we can do nothing.
