'The Voice' Singer Christian Cuevas Debuts Atop Hot Christian Songs
NBC's The Voice Christian Cuevas debuts at No. 1 on Billboard's Hot Christian Songs chart this week. The 20-year-old's version of Israel Houghton and New Breed's "To Worship You I Live (Away)" opens atop the chart dated Dec. 24. Cuevas was in the team of Alicia Keys, who was her coach also in the show.
After performing the song on the TV show on Dec. 5 , Cuevas' version became a fan favorite. The song sold 19,000 downloads in the tracking week ending Dec. 8, according to Nielsen Music. In addition to bowing atop Hot Christian Songs, "Worship" begins atop Christian Digital Song Sales.
Cuevas follows in the footsteps of fellow contestant Sundance Head of Team Blake (Shelton). Head whose cover of Tom T. Hall's "Me and Jesus" debuted atop the chart a week ago. Houghton's original was released on his set Alive in South Africa, which reached No. 3 on Top Christian Albums in 2005.
Cuevas is the son of Julio Cuevas, who was a popular musical artist in Puerto Rico in the 1970s. His father died two months after being diagnosed with liver cancer. During the first round of Blind Auditions on The Voice Season 11, 20-year-old Christian Cuevas sang the Michael Bolton song, "How Am I Supposed To Live Without You."
