Remembering Carrie Fisher: She Would be "Happy to be Shown That There's a God"
Actress Carrie Fisher, best known for her iconic role as Star Wars' Princess Leia, has died on December 27. She died days after suffering a heart attack while onboard a flight from London to Los Angeles.
"It is with a very deep sadness that Billie Lourd confirms that her beloved mother Carrie Fisher passed away at 8:55 this morning," family spokesperson Simon Halls told People. "She was loved by the world and she will be missed profoundly. Our entire family thanks you for your thoughts and prayers." Family spokesperson Simon Halls confirmed the news to The Hollywood Reporter
On December 23, 2016, Fisher was on a United Airlines flight from London to Los Angeles when she went into cardiac arrest fifteen minutes before the plane landed at Los Angeles International Airport. A passenger seated near Fisher reported that she had stopped breathing. Another passenger performed CPR on Fisher until paramedics arrived at the scene. After being taken by ambulance to Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, she was placed on a ventilator.
Fisher died four days later on December 27 at 8:55 a.m. (PST) in Los Angeles at 60 years of age. Fisher's daughter, Billie Lourd, confirmed her mother's death in a statement given to the press shortly afterward by family spokesperson, Simon Halls Fisher was survived by her daughter, her mother Debbie Reynolds, her brother Todd Fisher and their half-sisters Joely Fisher and Tricia Leigh Fisher along with her beloved dog Gary.
Fisher had once described herself as an "enthusiastic agnostic who would be happy to be shown that there is a God." Neverthless, she was raised Protestant, though she's half Jewish.
In an interview with LA Times, Fisher once said, " I was raised Protestant but I'm half-Jewish--the wrong half. They got ticked off in Israel when I went there with Paul (Simon) and we had gotten married by an Orthodox rabbi and I hadn't converted."
