Matt Vollmar of the Great Romance Discusses How God Helps Us Overcome Our Losses
St. Louis area worship/rock band The Great Romance has just released their new song, "Bigger Than The Odds," taken from the group's eponymous album. They also tour regularly, and they have shared the stage with some of the biggest acts in Christian music including Switchfoot, Toby Mac, Kutless, The David Crowder Band, Lincoln Brewster, For King and Country, Jordan Feliz and others. The band has played conventions and festivals including "A Night of Joy" at Disney World in Orlando, Florida.
We are honored to chat with Great Romance's Matt Vollmar for this exclusive interview.
Q: Matt, great to be able to chat with you. Who is the Great Romance?
So great to chat with you guys! We're a rock/worship band from the St Louis, MO area who travels all over the US singing about God. Right now The Great Romance consists of Matt Vollmar (lead vocals/rhythm guitar) and a rotation of Nashville musicians. All great guys with great hearts for ministry.
Q: Why do you call yourselves the Great Romance?
The name The Great Romance comes from our goal of telling others about the greatest relationship they can have. That relationship is with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and it is our mission to share that message with the world.
Q: One song that is causing a lot of buzz is "Bigger than the Odds." I believe the song came about after the tragic death of your two month-old baby. I am really sorry about that. Tell us more about the situation and how the Lord helped you through this difficult period in your life.
It was actually the two month old of a couple at my church. Her name was baby Cory and her parents were Jeanine and Bill Shepherd. The hardest part for them was that Jeanine's pregnancy was totally normal with no signs of complications. They were told their baby had a 95% chance of dying in 6 months and, at the time when I felt I had to say SOMETHING, I had no words. Then, I felt God say "I'm Bigger Than those odds" and shared that with them. I went home that night and wrote the song. And even though baby Cory passed, the song is about how God doesn't always fix the situation, but he promises to get us through it. And he has with them! They've adopted to little boys and continue to tell others their story.
Q: What do you have to say to some of our readers who have had experienced loss too?
That even when it seems darkest, God can get you through any situation. He's the only one who can do that! Man will let you down, but God never will. Put your trust in him.
Q: What are some of the other songs on your latest EP that you are excited about?
We have an EP out now called Who You Are that features an uptempo, high energy song called Sky Open Up that's a great worship tune. Also, the title track Who You Are. It's a mid tempo groove song about our life being about who God is, not us. We're dropping a 10 song album that features Bigger Than the Odds, as well as Stolen Me, Disappear and a concert favorite worship tune called Empty Hands on May the 4th for all you Star Wars fans out there.
Q: On Twitter, I have seen you lead nights of worship. Besides your own songs, what other songs do you include in your song set?
We love Hillsong and do a lot of Young and Free tunes like Real Love and Alive with our little spin on them. We've recently started doing Reckless Love and love to play No Longer Slaves as well as John Marks version of How He Loves.
Q: What makes a good song set for you when you lead worship?
Being able to have some high energy tunes up front where worshipers can express their love of Christ boldly and then transitioning to heartfelt ballads and seeing people cry out their praises to our God.
Q: If our readers would like to see you perform and lead worship, where can they find out about your dates and venues?
