Jo Dee Messina Takes Refuge in God in Cancer Battle by Recording "Reckless Love"

Jo Dee Messina

In the midst of her battle with cancer, country music singer Jo Dee Messina has found strength in God.  She has gone on to record Cory Asbury's worship tune "Reckless Heart."  A song that has also been recently recorded by Israel Houghton.

Speaking to PEOPLE, Messina explains:  "I heard this song in 2017 as part of a package from Bethel Music and watched a version of it on YouTube. This song took the wind out of me. It was then released to radio (by Asbury) and I was like, 'It's that song again.' It resonates with my soul and my spirit, especially considering as many mistakes I have made."

On September 6, 2017, Jo Dee Messina's team revealed she had been diagnosed with an unspecified cancer. All 2017 tour dates after October 7 were postponed as she underwent treatments in the fall.

"After being diagnosed, I was playing a winery in Missouri and I basically said 'FYI, this is what's going on,'" Messina, now 48, recalls. "It doesn't change the fact that God is good."

Messina has charted six number one singles on the Billboard country music charts. She has been honored by the Country Music Association, the Academy of Country Music and has been nominated for two Grammy Awards. She was the first female country artist to score three multiple-week Number One songs from the same album. Some of her hit songs include "Bye Bye," "I'm Alright" and "Stand Beside Me."
