Author Dr. Ron Kaiser Reveals How We Can Age With Enthusiasm in New Book
It's inevitable that we're all going to age, but Dr. Ronald Kaiser has discovered a way to make it enjoyable. In his new book, Rejuvenating: The Art and Science of Growing Older with Enthusiasm, Dr. Kaiser lays out the path to notonly embracing our later years but making them the best half of our lives. Drawing on more than a half-century of clinical experience, and 80 years of living, Kaiser shares his simple plan to success.
"For too many people, old age is perceived as a way station on the road to death. I'm here to upend that idea," says Dr. Kaiser, a licensed psychologist with a private practice, who also serves as a director of psychology at the world-renowned Jefferson Headache Center at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. "While recognizing that some people are medically, psychologically, or situationally limited, we now know that most of us can choose how we are going to age."
"This is the best book I've ever read about getting older. It's clear, grounded in science, enormously practical, and full of heart. A gem."
Rick Hanson, PhD, author of Resilient: How to Grow an Unshakable Core of Calm, Strength and Happiness
In addition to serving on staff at both Jefferson and Methodist Hospitals, Dr. Kaiser is Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Neurology at the Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University, and trains doctoral level interns. Many of his major professional contributions have occurred since the age of 70.
As he entered these active later years in life, Dr. Kaiser became concerned that too many people were aging with preventable disease and sometimes dying from them.
"Others were leading unhappy and meaningless lifestyles when they could still be contributing to society in some positive ways," he says. "I started to feel that it was something of a sacred obligation to pass along my knowledge - which was gained from my unique set of experiences that have involved living my life in a particular way, working with others, and considerable knowledge of science related to the brain and its ability to change."
This change he is referring to is called Neuroplasticity, meaning the brain can develop new pathways and neurons in the brain can grow and change at any age, enabling us to continue learning and developing our brains throughout our lifetimes. It's an outstanding scientific breakthrough.
"This book is a positive infusion of life's possibilities with aging."
Dr. Grady Harp, Amazon Top 100 Reviewer
A professional in the field of Positive Psychology, Kaiser emphasizes the importance of attitude. While we hear "the power of positive thinking" preached regularly across magazine covers, podcasts, self-help books and workshops, Kaiser adds the science to back up these claims and an action plan that almost anybody, regardless of physical or mental barriers, can achieve.
"Based upon widespread research as well as more than a half-century of work in the field, I have developed an approach that I call Goal-Achieving Psychology (GAP), which bridges the gap between thinking and doing. This approach underlies most of the recommendations made throughout the book," says Kaiser. "The goal of positive psychology is to help individuals thrive rather than simply achieve an average level of emotional functioning,"
Science has demonstrated that human beings have a negativity bias-a tendency to focus on negative possibilities rather than being optimistic in the face of challenges. Thinking positively not only enhances lifestyle but creates new pathways in our brains. Emphasizingthis, Kaiser has developed the Type P Personality, an insurance policy against decline. The "P" stands for personal goal-driven, proactive, positive, persistent, passionate, and playful.
"REJUVENAGING combines scientific data with positive and active approaches that work to enable the aging process to occur with health and enthusiasm."
Dawn C. Buse, Ph.D, Clinical Health Psychologist, Clinical Professor of Neurology,
Albert Einstein College of Medicine
"Although inspirational for the elderly, it has been written so that anyone can plan for their future in a positive way, whatever their age."
Susan Keefe, Midwest Book Review
While written for folks entering their second half century of life, this book is an inspirational goldmine for any age. "Aging is really a privilege," says Kaiser. "I want this book to be a vehicle to enable others to join me in saying, "If I knew how much fun old age would be, I'd have grown older faster."
