Reinhard Bonnke, Evangelist who Drew Millions in Africa, Dies
Reinhard Bonnke, who drew huge crowds in Africa over decades of preaching, has died at age 79. He died on December 7, at home, surrounded by family, and is survived by his wife, three children, and eight grandchildren.
His wife Anni announces on Facebook: "It is with sorrow that the Bonnke Family would like to announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, and grandfather, Evangelist Reinhard Bonnke. He passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, on December 7, 2019. For the past 60 years he has preached the glorious Gospel of Jesus throughout the entire world. We want to thank you on behalf of him and our family, for your kind love and unwavering support, which enabled him to preach the matchless message of salvation to countless people. He preached Jesus..."
Bonnke is known across the African continent for his mass crusades that are attended by thousands. The 79-years-old is credited with overseeing the conversion of 77 million people to Christianity. In 1984, he commissioned the construction of the world's largest mobile structure - a tent capable of seating 34,000 people. He founded CfaN (Christ for All Nations) over 45 years ago and it currently has offices in the United States, Brazil, Canada, Germany, Czech Republic, United Kingdom, Nigeria, South Africa, Singapore, Australia, and Hong Kong.
In 2017, Bonnke held a farewell crusade, which it is reported was attended by 1.7 million people in Nigeria. In the meetings, that went on for five days, Bonnke passed on the leadership of Christ for All Nations to evangelist Daniel Kolenda due to his "health challenges."
Bonnke was the author of 40 books and wrote in his 2009 autobiography, Living a Life of Fire, "I still have only one sermon. I preach the simple ABCs of the gospel."
Hillsong senior pastor Brian Houston cited Bonnke as an inspiration, saying, "I love the way salvation resonates in his spirit, whether he's on a platform speaking to millions or behind the scenes having a chat-Jesus is always on his lips."
The family has asked mourners to make a donation to his church Christ for all Nations (CfaN) - Africa Crusade in lieu of flowers.
