Hear the Story Behind Getty’s "Christ Our Hope in Life and Death"
World-renowned Christian music and hymn writers, Keith and Kristyn Getty have collaborated with Matt Boswell, Jordan Kauflin, Matt Merker and Matt Papa to compose a new hymn called, 'Christ Our Hope in Life and Death.' The new hymn draws on deep theological questions, reminding Christians throughout the world of the hope that can be found in Christ's death and resurrection. With their unique ability to write songs for both contemporary and traditional contexts, the Gettys are encouraging the Church and Christian believers to come together and sing about the unshakable hope of Jesus Christ.
*Research from the University of East Anglia (UEA), found that people who took part in a community singing group maintained or improved their mental health. Moreover, a combination of singing and socialising contributed to their recovery, promoting an ongoing feeling of belonging and wellbeing.
It is estimated that 100 million people are singing Getty hymns in Church services each year. With a huge amount of uncertainty in our world today, many churches have stopped meeting face to face, but are still joining together in worship online. This new hymn is an example of a song that can be sung to offer assurance and comfort in a time of trial and uneasiness.
Keith Getty said, "The reality of Jesus' resurrection from the dead is central to Christian faith. By his resurrection, Christ conquered sin and death and now offers forgiveness and eternal life to all who turn from sin and trust in him. Therefore, we want to equip churches to sing about the resurrection. The resurrection transforms the way that we live every day, and it provides unshakable hope in Jesus."
The new hymn is notable for several reasons. Firstly it is inspired by the first article of the historic Heidelberg Catechism of 1563, which no other hymn in wide circulation has been inspired by. Secondly the hymn confronts the reality of death with boldness and honesty and the reality of Christ conquering death so that forgiveness and eternal life can be given to those who turn from sin and trust in Him.
'Christ Our Hope in Life and Death' will be released on all streaming platforms on 20th March 2020, and it will be played live this year at Getty Music Sing! Conference in Nashville, TN.
