"Orange is the New Black" Cancelled Permanently? Fans React to Rumors That the Netflix Original Series May Be Over For Good
The cries of devastated fans echoed across cyberspace on Friday July 11, when Empire News reported that "Orange is the New Black" had been cancelled. The wildly popular Netflix original series recently released its second season at the beginning of June, and was greenlighted for a third season to begin production. Viewers were devastated. Say it isn't so!
It actually isn't so. The headline from Empire News read, "Netflix pulls plug on 'Orange is the New Black;' the reason why may shock you." The article went on to give very official-sounding "statements" claiming that Netflix head Reed Hastings and the creator of the show, Jenji Kohan had experienced a falling-out, leading to the permanent cancellation of the show. "Also, starting September 1st, 2014, past episodes will no longer be available for streaming on Netflix," the supposed press release included.
However, had readers proceeded a bit further in their reading of the article, they may have realized sooner that they were being hoaxed. Empire News is a satirical news site, and there is no truth behind this cancellation hoax, as revealed by "Orange is the New Black" star Kate Mulgrew, and backed up by the show's official Twitter account.
"#OITNB HAS NOT been cancelled. It's renewed for a 3rd season which is currently in production. The website reporting the story is a hoax," proclaimed Mulgrew on her official Facebook account. The show's official Twitter responded as well, stating yesterday July 12, "Orange Is The New Black has NOT been canceled. Whoever started this rumor will be spending some time in the SHU."
Rest easy, inmates. Piper and the rest of the Litchfield gang live on.
