'Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes' Wins Box Office Weekend with $73M Beating out 'Transformers: Age of Extinction'
The new movie Dawn of the Planet of the Apes topped this weekend's box office with a staggering $73 million gross sales. This was a great sign Rise of the Planet of the Apes brought in $54.8 million in its debut week in August 2011. So fan excitement has grown for the movie series and it showed as people flocked to the theater to see the new movie.
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes beat out Transformers: Age of Extinction starring Mark Wahlberg and Nicola Peltz that came in second place with an additional $16.5 million, which helped the film cross the $200 million mark at the domestic box office.
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes stars Andy Serkis and Gary Oldman in a saga taking place ten years after humanity has been mostly wiped out, jumped 33% from the opening weekend of Rise of the Planet of the Apes. Three years ago, the Rise of the Planet of the Apes earned $176m domestic and $481m worldwide, the second-biggest August release ever. If numbers stay strong, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, could pass $200m domestic.
The original five-film series starting in 1968 and has been a popular sci-fi classic all the way up to Tim Burton's Planet of the Apes remake back in 2001. Some think the Mark Wahlberg remake was pretty bad, but it did great at the box office, securing the second-biggest opening weekend of all-time back then with $69m (it would be about $106m today with 3D and inflation).
