Story Behind Dave Palmer's "Faithful"
UK veteran worship leader and songwriter Dave Palmer has recently partnered with Homegrown Worship to release his new single "Faithful." Written by Palmer himself, the song speaks of the trustworthiness of our God.
Palmer takes the time to share the story behind this worship song. "I wrote the chorus to this song some time ago while worshipping God on my own and expressing how utterly certain, reliable, unchanging, unceasing and unfailing God is in his love and faithfulness towards us.
The psalmist writes in Psalm 89 "I will sing of the Lord's great love forever; with my mouth I will make your faithfulness known through all generations. I will declare that your love stands firm forever, that you have established your faithfulness in heaven itself."
When we talk of God's faithfulness we, rightly, bring to mind our past experiences of when God has been there for us and when we have seen his goodness again and again. But interwoven with this is an even greater reality - that God's faithfulness is established in heaven. It is far greater than what I've seen through my life - it is a fundamental, eternal, unchanging attribute of God. As long as heaven exists and as long as God is alive then his faithfulness is guaranteed. It surpasses any experience we may base our understanding on or any evidence that we might point to in our history. Even in the middle of circumstances that could cause us to question it, his love and his faithfulness are certain.
As I worked on this song and fleshed out the initial ideas, the question came to mind "so what is my response to this continual faithfulness?" The psalmist says "I will make your faithfulness known through all generations." God's faithfulness should definitely cause us to thank and praise him. But there should also be another response - that we cannot keep quiet about this love and faithfulness we have found; that we don't keep it to ourselves; that everyone around us should hear about it. "We'll sing out a song of Your faithfulness... the whole earth will hear and join in with us, You will be praised."
Dave Palmer has been leading worship for over 20 years and is actively involved in the worship team at his home church of City Church Coventry. His songs have a strong emphasis on corporate worship and have been used by churches around the UK and beyond. In 2017, Palmer released his debut album "Enthroned".
