Natasha Owens Chats About Celebrating Christmas Earlier and Her Upcoming Christmas Album
In the midst of a global pandemic, civil unrest, and even murder hornets, Christian Music powerhouse Natasha Owens is delivering some much needed Christmas cheer a little early with her new music video, "Too Much Christmas" - directed by Max Hsu (Newsboys, Danny Gokey, Unspoken).
The single, intentionally released OUTSIDE of the Christmas season, will be included in Natasha's upcoming Christmas album, due November 27th. Make no mistake.... This is a "Christmas" single for all year round. And this year, we need it RIGHT NOW!
Owens exploded onto the Christian Music scene with her 2016 debut, No One But You. She suddenly found herself touring as the opening act for Christian Music's most iconic artists, including Michael W. Smith and Jason Crabb.
Her 2017 follow-up, We Will Rise, was named "Inspirational Album of the Year" at the 2018 We Love Christian Music Awards. And in 2019, Owens signed to Radiate Music and released her third album, Warrior, produced and co-written by award-winning producer Ian Eskelin (Francesca Battistelli, Sidewalk Prophets). Instantly relatable, Owens has quickly resonated with listeners and has had extensive media coverage including appearances on Fox News and HLN, among others.
Q: Natasha, it's great to catch up with you again. How are you doing in this pandemic?
I am staying busy. We have used this down time from the road to create not only a full Christmas Album but another full Album that will launch next Spring. As for the pandemic, not doing very well with the masks. I'm so claustrophobic.
Q: You have deliberately released a new Christmas single outside of the festive season. Why did you decide to release a summer Christmas single?
2020 has been the longest year ever. I had made the comment that I wish Christmas was already here. And then a lightbulb went off. Let's bring a little Christmas cheer early.
Q: Tell us more about the story behind "Too Much Christmas."We all know someone who just loves Christmas so much that they celebrate it all year, in some way. This song is about someone who leaves their decorations up all year round and their life is centered around the spirit of Christmas.
Q: The video, directed by Max Hsu, is pretty unique too. Tell us about the inspiration behind the video.
We wanted to capture a day in the life of someone who was obsessed with Christmas. So we started brainstorming and said wouldn't it be funny if we incorporated a little bit of Christmas Vacation with a little bit of Dumb and Dummer. Then put a purpose or a meaning behind it. Max did not disappoint. The brought it to life and created exactly what we wanted.
Q: You have a Christmas album coming later in the year. Is this your first Christmas record? How is making a seasonal record different from making a regular album?
This is the first Christmas record and has been on my bucket list for years now. Making a Christmas Album has been a blast. You don't have to follow all the rules of creating music in CCM. You can do anything you want, incorporate any instruments you want. You can create outside the box. I have loved every moment of it.
Q: Will there be a mixture of original tunes and Christmas carols? What are some of Christmas carols you have recorded?
It's a half original and half Christmas Carol covers. We chose: Away in a Manger, I'll be Home for Christmas, Winter Wonderland and O Holy Night
Q: Besides "Too Much Christmas," give us a sneak preview of some of the other original compositions.
When my Dad was alive he was all about making Christmas Memories so of course we had to write a song that incorporated memories that made Christmas special. And most importantly incorporated my English bulldogs into the lyric. We wrote an original called "Dancing Santa Clause"" It's a fun 70's disco tune that talks about creating and sending dancing Santa Claus Gifs.
Another original is "God Bless You." Of all the words you could say during a holiday season God Bless you is the most meaningful. We also covered the Grownup Christmas List song. It has been one of my favorite and the most meaningful Christmas songs. So I'm happy that we are recording it. And lastly, we are putting last years Christmas single "A Christmas Twist" on this record as well.
Q: With the pandemic upon us, this Christmas will be very different, how will your new record encourage us and draw us closer to Jesus?
In this day and time the church has an incredible opportunity to be a light in the midst of the darkness. To reach out to a world that lives outside of the 4 walls of a church building. The true meaning of Christmas is all about giving and showing the unconditional love of Christ. I hope that this record will put surround the listener with Christmas cheer and will remind them the importance of loving the people around us. Of making a difference in someone's life.
