New James Brown Biopic "Get On Up" Starring Chadwick Boseman Premieres in Theaters on August 1
2014 has been an exciting year for music biopics. First we had "Jersey Boys," the Broadway movie-turned-musical about the Four Seasons. Recently, Ron Howard announced his intentions to create a documentary depicting the touring years of the Beatles. Now we have "Get On Up," the story of James Brown from his South Carolina roots to his Hollywood spotlight.
The film is directed by Tate Taylor, whose most recent film, "The Help," made a killing in the box office. the film stars Chadwick Boseman as the Godfather of Soul himself, as well as Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer, Dan Aykroyd, and Lennie James. Boseman's star is clearly on the rise, as he has also been cast in the film "Gods of Egypt," which will premiere in theaters in 2016. Boseman is probably best known for his longtime role on the daytime TV drama "All My Children," although he was also in the films "Draft Day" and "42."
The film will not be shying away from depicting the uglier parts of Brown's life. Brown had a well-known addiction to PCP and cocaine, and was known for his run-ins with the law, such as instances of domestic violence and unlawful use of a firearm.
Despite the turbulent nature of his life, Brown was known as one of the hardest working men in show business. He toured regularly throughout his life, even when he had reached an advanced age. James Brown passed away in 2006 after a fifty-year-long career and four albums on the Rolling Stone's list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.
"Get On Up" comes out in theaters on August 1. You can watch the trailer here.
