Hillsong Church is 38 Years-Old!
Hillsong Church celebrates its 38th birthday this month. The Australia-based megachurch was originally called Hills Christian Life Centre. It was established in 1983 in Baulkham Hills, New South Wales, by Brian Houston and his wife Bobbie. The church started with 40 members and today it has 150,000 members in 23 countries. In Australia, the denomination reported 30 churches and 43,000 members in 2018. Until separating from it in 2018, Hillsong was a member of the Australian Christian Churches (the Australian branch of the Assemblies of God).
Global senior pastor Bobbie Houston writes, "This week bears witness to 38 years of God drawing, gathering and knitting together a community of people, not only in and across Australia, but also across the world. A stunning company of good, good citizens seeking to make this world and the cities they inhabit a better place.
Those who call Hillsong home are certainly not perfect, nor arrived ... yet their prevailing devotion and resolve is to become more Christlike with each passing year and season. They live generously that others might experience the goodness of God, and one day, eternity will recount the many acts of kindnesses and responses that have brought felt impact and life-lines to others."
The church is also known for its worship music, with groups such as Hillsong Worship, Hillsong United and Hillsong Young & Free. Until separating from it in 2018, Hillsong was a member of the Australian Christian Churches (the Australian branch of the Assemblies of God). The church also owns three record labels, a film and television platform, multiple worldwide conferences, and an international college.
Each week, Hillsong's music is sung by an estimated 50 million people in 60 languages, and Houston's sermons are broadcast around the globe. In June 2016, Hillsong launched a global, 24-hour channel in partnership with Trinity Broadcasting Network, providing access to the worship and ministry to millions of viewers around the world. Through Hillsong's college, conferences, podcasts, broadcasting and publishing, Houston trains and equips tens of thousands of Christian leaders and encourages countless others in their daily faith.
