“Star Trek 3” Released 2016, Kirk to Go Dark, Enterprise to Go Back Where No Man Has Gone Before? These And Other Related News Bits, Teasers and Spoilers!
Paramount Pictures is aiming to have Star Trek 3 ready for release by 2016 to make it in time for the 50th year anniversary of Gene Roddenberry's franchise original TV sci-fi classic. Robert Orci will be directing the film. The lead cast actors in the two previous Star Trek movies are all expected to return - Chris Pine (Kirk), Zachary Quinto (Spock), Zoe Saldana (Uhura), Karl Urban (McCoy), Simon Pegg (Scotty), John Cho (Sulu) and Anton Yelchin (Chekov).
In the next installment, we may see Kirk having to battle it out with his own internal demons. As Chris Pine observed in an interview with Total Films, "Well, for anybody that's seen [Star Trek 2, aka Into Darkness], given the fact that Kirk's been revived by Khan's blood, I think there's definitely room for Kirk to go dark, which we've obviously seen in the original series..." Kirk did went dark in the original series so there's a possibility that this could happen again in the next film in the reboot version. This next Star Trek film will incidentally be the last in Pine's three-picture deal with Paramount for the franchise.
Writer and Director Orci confirmed to Variety that "In this movie, they are closer than they are to the original series characters that you have ever seen. They have set off on their five-year mission. So their adventure is going to be in deep space." In the original TV series, remember that the five-year mission of the U.S.S. Enterprise, as voiced over in the opening sequence by William Shatner, is: to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations, to boldly go where no man has gone before. So die-hard Trekkies have really much to look forward to this time around.
Aside from Orci, the job of writing the screenplay will be shared by Alex Kurtzman with Ashley Edward Miller and Zack Stentz. Star Trek 3 will be Orci's directorial debut. He took over from J. J. Abrams, the director for Star Trek 1 and 2 in the reboot, who is still busy directing Star Wars Episode VII. Abrams will remain as producer in Star Trek 3.
