Albert Mohler Jr. is Out of the Hospital After Discovering Blood Clots in Both Lungs

Albert Mohler, Jr.

Albert Mohler Jr., president of Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, has been released from the hospital after suffering blood clots in both lungs. Mohler thanked the many who prayed for him and the "very effective medical treatment" he received during his recent hospital stay last week because of blood clots in his lungs.

"Last Friday night I experienced a very serious blood clot which went to my right lung and was preventing me from breathing," he said in a statement released Wednesday night. "At the hospital, pulmonary emboli were identified in both lungs, with a major source clot in one of my legs. Very effective medical treatment was begun immediately, and I was under excellent care (at Baptist Health of Louisville).

"Most importantly, tests revealed that I carry a genetic factor that massively increases the likelihood of dangerous clots and emboli. That is helpful knowledge. I am thankful that there are treatments and medicines that can prevent or mitigate such dangerous clots in the future. I can assure you that I am fully cooperating with medical advice."

Mohler said he was released from the hospital and is recovering at home. "I have made limited appearances to our Board of Trustees meeting and the scheduled faculty meeting necessary for May's commencement ceremonies," he explained. "I will do my best to work back to my regular schedule, while following medical advice."

Mohler is the ninth president of The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky, and host of the podcast The Briefing, where he daily analyzes the news and recent events from an evangelical perspective. He has been described as "one of America's most influential evangelicals."

He also regularly broadcasts interviews with various different people on a podcast called Thinking in Public. He is former vice chairman of the board of Focus on the Family and a member of the Council on Biblical Manhood and Womanhood. Christianity Today recognized Mohler as a leader among American evangelicals, and in 2003 Time called him the "reigning intellectual of the evangelical movement in the U.S." Mohler has presented lectures or addresses at a variety of conservative evangelical universities.
