Arming America's Teachers: Teachers Being Armed To Curb The Rising Incidents Of School Shootings

It is said that when the school year begins, more teachers will be armed. Since shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School was witnessed more than a year and a half ago, teachers in nine states have been allowed to have firearms in schools. The teachers are allowed to have the firearms to protect their students against an increasingly common threat which is school shooting.

It is reported that twelve of the state's districts employ teachers who are trained and are getting weapons at Shield Solutions in West Plains. Greg Martin who runs the program says," we've taken people who have never really handled a handgun at all and given them this training and turn them out to where they score a 90 percent."

It is said that when the semester begins, only the local police and the school board will know that the teachers are armed. When questioned, an administrator said that she went through the training as she is from a rural school and it could take time to get any law enforcement so that she could protect the students in their school.

The training will include 5 hours in the classroom and 35 hours on the gun range. It is said that they want to make it as realistic as possible so that teachers will be ready in case a school shooting happens. Though some teachers are for the program, others like Kathy Steinhoff who is a high school Maths teacher is not in support of teachers being armed with guns in schools. Her district prohibits teachers from carrying guns. She adds to say that if there is anyone who should stop the school shooters should be the police rather than giving guns to the teachers.

While such programs as Martin's are not common, majority of the law makers are pushing to make it mandatory for teachers to attend the training and to carry them to school so that they can protect the students. Some are for the idea while others are against the idea. We only have to wait and see what eventually happens and find out the best way to stop the school shooters.
