Twenty-nine years ago today, The Preacher's Wife soundtrack-one of the defining gospel albums of the 1990s and the best-selling gospel soundtrack of all time-was released. Featuring Whitney Houston at the height of her vocal and artistic power, the project remains a cherished milestone in both film and music history. To mark the anniversary, producer and arranger Mervyn Warren reflects on his unforgettable experience working with Houston in the studio.

Warren, co-producer of the soundtrack and known for his work with artists across gospel, pop, and film, remembers Houston as a powerhouse vocalist whose confidence was matched only by her warmth. "She was a very confident vocalist," he shared. "I don't mean she was arrogant or conceited, but after she sang a song three or four times, I think she had a sense she had done enough takes. So she would say, 'You have enough?' (Laughs.)"

According to Warren, the answer was almost always yes. "More often than not, I did have enough. She laughed a lot. We laughed a lot." He described the sessions as joyful, free, and filled with the kind of artistry only Houston could bring-a blend of spiritual depth, emotional clarity, and trademark vocal brilliance that elevated every track on the record.

Released on November 26, 1996, the soundtrack features stirring gospel selections, soaring ballads, and collaborations with the Georgia Mass Choir. Songs like "I Believe in You and Me," "Step by Step," and "Joy to the World" became fan favorites and showcased Houston's seamless ability to move between pop and gospel with authenticity and passion.

Nearly three decades later, The Preacher's Wife soundtrack continues to resonate as one of Whitney Houston's most beloved works, a testament not only to her unmatched voice but also to the creative synergy and joyful spirit captured during the recording process.

For many fans, the anniversary is a reminder of Houston's extraordinary legacy-one marked by excellence, laughter, and music that still inspires hearts around the world.
