Gunman Hijacks Samaritan’s Purse Plane in South Sudan

Samaritan's Purse is expressing gratitude to God and to South Sudanese authorities after a harrowing hijacking involving one of its humanitarian aircraft ended without loss of life. On December 2, a Cessna 208B Grand Caravan traveling from Juba to Maiwut-where it was transporting medical supplies for the ministry's mobile medical unit-was overtaken mid-flight by an armed intruder who had boarded the aircraft undetected before takeoff.

During the flight, the gunman demanded that the pilot divert the plane to Chad. After circling for hours, the pilot convinced the hijacker that the aircraft needed to land for refueling, ultimately bringing the plane safely to the city of Wau. Upon landing, South Sudanese security forces intervened and took the hijacker into custody. No serious injuries were reported among the pilot or the Samaritan's Purse staff member onboard.

In a statement, Samaritan's Purse said, "We thank God for His hand of protection. We are deeply grateful for the swift response of the authorities in Wau and for their efforts to ensure the safety of our team." The ministry added that it remains committed to serving the people of South Sudan through medical care, emergency relief, and ongoing humanitarian aid-despite the significant risks workers often face in conflict-affected areas.

As the investigation continues, Samaritan's Purse is asking supporters to pray for its teams serving in difficult environments around the world, for the communities they assist, and for peace across South Sudan.
