Blending bold faith with fresh musical creativity, husband-and-wife duo Mountains in the Sea are carving out a distinctive lane in today's Christian music landscape. Known for weaving Scripture directly into their songwriting while embracing dynamic, modern production, the pair's latest single, "Not By Might," reflects a deeply personal journey of surrender, trust, and spiritual adventure. As they prepare to unveil their upcoming EP Breakthrough, the duo opens up about their unique creative partnership, life on the road with their family, and why they believe God is ushering in a new season where openly faith-filled songs are reaching wider audiences than ever before.

Q: For listeners who are just discovering Mountains in the Sea, how would you describe who you are as artists and as a husband-and-wife duo, and what shapes the heart behind your music?

We were both making music independently before we met each other, but when we started dating and later got married, we realized how naturally we fit together musically. God knew! The heart behind our music is to create songs that are deeply rooted in Scripture while also pushing Christian music into new musical territory rather than simply sounding like what's already out there. We're seeing God do something new in Christian music, where boldly Christian songs are beginning to reach mainstream charts, and it's exciting to witness that shift.

Q: "Not By Might" is rooted in Zechariah 4:6. How did that scripture speak into your personal lives during the writing process, and why did it feel like the right message for this season?

Over the past several years, we've been on a wild journey with the Lord, traveling the country in an RV with our kids wherever He led us. It has truly been a faith journey, and we share parts of it in our YouTube series A Life of Wild Faith. That lifestyle reflects the message of Zechariah 4:6 because none of it could have happened in our own strength. During one of those trips, Phil woke up hearing the name "Zerubbabel," looked it up, and discovered the connection to this verse. Since then, the scripture has carried deep significance for us.

Q: Musically, the song blends driving guitars with infectious pop energy. How did you balance creating something fun and upbeat while still carrying a deeply spiritual theme of surrender and reliance on God?

We wanted the song to have an anthemic chorus because there's something powerful about God's people boldly declaring His Word together. For us, there's a certain "pump-up" factor that prepares you to take a leap of faith, knowing you can't accomplish it in your own strength but only by God's Spirit. The song reflects the joy and excitement we've experienced in living a surrendered life and watching God show up in unexpected ways.

Q: As a married duo, how does your relationship influence the way you collaborate creatively-especially when writing songs that deal with faith, struggle, and encouragement?

Over time, we've learned more about the giftings God has given each of us and how we work best together. It's been a process of refining our workflow. Being married is such a gift creatively because we share so many life experiences that shape our writing from a common perspective. We're also always together, so we can create whenever inspiration strikes rather than scheduling writing sessions. Our comfort and closeness naturally flow into the music.

Q: "Not By Might" is the second track from your upcoming EP, Breakthrough. How does this song help set the tone for the project, and what can listeners expect thematically from the rest of the EP?

The first track on the EP focuses on God as the One who brings breakthrough. "Not By Might" takes that message further by emphasizing that breakthrough doesn't come through our own power but through His Spirit. The rest of the EP continues this theme, which we believe is deeply needed in the body of Christ right now. The third track explores surrender to God's will, and we're excited to see how everything ties together as the project unfolds.

Q: Looking ahead, how does "Not By Might" point toward the future of Mountains in the Sea? What directions-musically or spiritually-are you excited to explore in your upcoming music?
A: One thing we did with "Not By Might" was keep the chorus almost directly from Scripture, and that's something we hope to continue doing. It seems to resonate strongly with listeners when they can sing familiar words that carry spiritual weight-not our words, but God's. Moving forward, we're excited to keep exploring music that blends biblical truth with fresh sounds and creative experimentation.
