Q: For readers who may be discovering you through "You Don't Knock," how would you describe who Darin & Brooke Aldridge are as artists, and how your faith continues to shape your music today?
Who we are as artists comes from core principles from our beliefs that emphasize the importance of mutual respect and prioritizing love in all aspects of life. We each contribute unique qualities to our partnership, and recognizing these attributes is essential. Supporting each other's personal growth is a shared passion of ours. We love helping each other grow as individuals. Where one of us is lacking, the other is always there to contribute what is needed. This collaborative effort has significantly enriched our relationship, fostering growth both in our personal lives and professional endeavors.
Q: "You Don't Knock" is such a joyful, high-energy gospel anthem. What was the inspiration behind the song, and what message do you hope listeners take away from it?
Our recording draws inspiration from the cherished interpretation by New Grass Revival from the 1980s. Having held this song in high regard for years, we believed it was the perfect moment to revive it with new vigor while paying homage to its rich, soulful heritage. To capture the essence of the original, we felt it essential to feature one of New Grass Revival's iconic members, John Cowan, to lend his powerful voice to our rendition. While we aimed to include an upbeat, jazzy Jesus-style track on this album, our primary goal was to remind listeners of God's invitation to seek Him in their lives. It's a gentle nudge that encourages us to remember that He is always at our heart's door, waiting for us to invite Him in.
Q: This single marks your first collaboration with John Cowan. What was it like working with him, and how did his unmistakable voice elevate the spirit of the track?
This isn't our first time collaborating with John Cowan; we've been incredibly lucky to have worked alongside him numerous times since 2017. It's always a privilege to unite our voices with his. We knew that his distinctive vocals and deep-rooted musical sensibility would truly enhance the track. When you listen all the way through to Soul Condition, "You Don't Knock" will be one of those songs that you'll revisit time and time again because it'll be impossible to get it out of your head.
Q: "Soul Condition" is your second full gospel album and your 11th studio project overall. How does this record reflect your growth both musically and spiritually compared to your earlier releases?
"Soul Condition" represents the evolution of our unique D&B sound that we've cultivated over the years. We take great pride in our roots and the Appalachian heritage that has profoundly influenced our identity. Each of our albums showcases a distinct sound, but a visit to Western North Carolina-the place where we spent our formative years-would offer deeper insight into the values and experiences that were ingrained in us from an early age. This foundation has been the bedrock of our journey as we transitioned into a professional music career, both individually and as a collective.
Q: You've built an incredible career in bluegrass while maintaining strong gospel roots. How do you balance honoring tradition with creating music that connects with new generations of listeners?
We think that goes back to where you come from as an audience. We love all styles of bluegrass, roots, and country gospel music. What we're able to do as artists is incorporate a little bit of all those bluegrass, roots, and country gospel styles we love and present that to our audiences. So far, we feel that by doing that we've introduced a lot of new listeners to bluegrass, roots, and country gospel. Creating catchy content using certain songs also helps. The stories that tell where the songs come from-where they originated-are important as well. When the younger generation knows where and how things originated, it makes it have more of a cool factor. They like hearing how something from the past has been modified and updated but still has that cool, old sound and effect.
Q: With such a full tour schedule ahead, how does performing songs like "You Don't Knock" live impact you personally, and what can audiences expect when they experience this new music on stage?
With such a full tour schedule, we always go into new music expecting the band, including ourselves, to know it inside and out like the recording. We've actually been doing "You Don't Knock" for a few years now in our live performances and have a great feel for it. We can already tell it's quickly becoming a new crowd favorite. As soon as we kick into it, the audience is already tapping their toes, nodding their heads, and eager to clap along-not knowing that we are fixing to engage them at the end of the song when it changes keys. It's one of our favorites as well because of the upbeat, bluesy, jazzy Jesus feel that it holds. If you come see us live, you'll see what we're talking about.
