Award-winning worship leader Chris Tomlin is bringing one of the oldest known Christian hymns back to life through a powerful new song and a cinematic experience, The First Hymn, arriving in theaters nationwide through Fathom Entertainment for special screenings March 24 and 26.

The project centers on the ancient Oxyrhynchus Hymn, a fragment discovered in Egypt and widely recognized as the earliest surviving Christian hymn with both lyrics and musical notation, dating back to the third century. Now, nearly 1,800 years later, Tomlin-alongside Grammy-winning songwriter Ben Fielding-has reimagined the historic text as a modern worship anthem titled "The First Hymn."

The accompanying documentary traces the remarkable journey of the hymn from its origins in the Egyptian desert to its rediscovery and revival for today's global Church. Hosted by historian John Dickson, the film blends archaeological insight, theological reflection, and live worship, offering audiences a rare glimpse into the worship life of the early Church.

"This is more than just a song-it's a moment," Tomlin shares in connection with the project. "We're joining voices with believers from nearly two millennia ago."

The hymn itself reflects a fully formed early Christian theology, including Trinitarian language that predates the Council of Nicaea, and a bold declaration of God as the giver of all good gifts-words that would have stood in stark contrast to the surrounding Roman culture. The documentary highlights how early Christians likely sang such hymns in the face of persecution, offering praise marked by faith, courage, and unity.

Through The First Hymn, Tomlin and Fielding invite modern believers to reconnect with a shared spiritual heritage-one that existed before denominational divides and continues to echo across generations. The Fathom Entertainment release includes exclusive cinematic content and a special introduction from the artists, creating a unique worship experience on the big screen.

The film runs approximately 92 minutes and will be shown as a limited theatrical event, encouraging churches, worship leaders, and audiences worldwide to rediscover the roots of Christian worship.
