Country music star and "American Idol" judge Luke Bryan is reflecting on the lasting impact of his church upbringing, saying his Southern Baptist roots played a key role in shaping both his faith and his journey in music.
Speaking after the show's recent "Songs of Faith" episode, Bryan shared how growing up in Leesburg, Georgia, deeply influenced his life. Just steps from his local church, he was immersed in the rhythms of Sunday worship and Gospel preaching from an early age. He said those experiences helped shape his worldview and direction long before his rise to fame.
Bryan, a five-time Entertainer of the Year winner with more than two dozen No. 1 hits, said his involvement in church life extended beyond simply attending services. Singing in the choir and participating in youth gatherings helped form both his character and his musical foundation, laying the groundwork for his future career.
Even as he began performing in honky-tonks and country venues, Bryan said he never left those roots behind. He often incorporated Christian songs into his sets, seeing no reason to separate his faith from his music, regardless of the audience or setting.
He described his church upbringing as a steady source of strength throughout his career, calling it a "blessing" that has helped him navigate the challenges of the music industry.
That influence was especially evident during "American Idol's" faith-themed episode, where contestants performed songs centered on worship, testimony and their personal relationship with Jesus. Bryan noted the strong response from viewers each year, saying the episode continues to resonate with audiences across the country.
He also highlighted fellow judge Carrie Underwood's role in shaping the tone of the night, pointing to her openness about her faith as both impactful and inspiring. Bryan said seeing faith expressed so publicly on a major platform is meaningful in today's culture.
According to Bryan, the faith-centered theme often draws out a deeper level of emotion and authenticity from contestants, with performances marked by passion and sincerity. He added that the atmosphere during the episode felt different from a typical show, describing it as a moment where the presence of the Holy Spirit was clearly felt in the room.
