The social media account that promised a "major" update on the Nancy Guthrie case finally delivered Wednesday night - but what it revealed raises more questions than answers.
On April 15, The Midwest Pundit posted an announcement on Facebook stating that a major Nancy Guthrie investigation update would drop at 9 p.m. ET. The post immediately went viral, with thousands of followers tuning in and the account Crimewives Club adding fuel to the fire with the caption: "I am SHOOK." When the hour came, the account followed through with a bullet-point breakdown of what it described as new developments.
According to the post, a ransom payment was made to an individual the account referred to as "Bitcoin Guy." The account also claimed this person admitted via email that Nancy never made it to Mexico - but was reportedly alive for one to two days after her disappearance. It further described "Bitcoin Guy" as an eavesdropper rather than the actual kidnapper, and claimed the FBI currently has a person of interest. Its summary stated: "Ransom paid, information points away from Mexico, unlikely dude is connected, the FBI has a person of interest." The account also hinted it knew the identity of the main suspect but stopped short of providing specific details.
None of these claims have been confirmed by law enforcement. As of early April, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos has stated publicly that he believes Nancy was specifically targeted, but no arrests have been made, no motive confirmed, and no trace of her location has been made public. TMZ previously reported receiving ransom notes demanding one Bitcoin - around $34,000 - to deliver Nancy's kidnappers "on a silver platter," with one note also claiming she was seen alive in the Mexican state of Sonora. However, a cold case detective questioned those notes, pointing out that the sender was asking for far less than the $100,000 FBI reward or the family's $1 million private offer - calling the Bitcoin demand "suspect."
As for The Midwest Pundit, the anonymous account with around 18,000 followers has a track record of mixing verifiable events with unverified claims - including a previous assertion that the FBI had located a suspect in Mexico, which no official source ever confirmed. Followers treat the account as a reliable insider; critics consistently question its sourcing.
Wednesday marked Day 74 in the search for Nancy Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of NBC Today show host Savannah Guthrie, who vanished from her Tucson-area home on February 1. She disappeared the night before she was expected to join a weekly church livestream she attended faithfully - a routine that made her absence immediately alarming to her family and community. Savannah has publicly said she still believes in a miracle, while acknowledging her mother may have already "gone home to the Lord."
A combined reward of $1.2 million remains on offer. Anyone with information is urged to contact the FBI at 1-800-CALL-FBI.
Until the Pima County Sheriff's Department or FBI speaks officially, the Midwest Pundit's claims remain exactly what they are - unverified posts on social media. For a family still waiting for answers, only confirmed truth matters.
