A massive new study just confirmed what Christian music fans already know: faith-based radio is not a niche - it is everywhere.
The Pew Research Center released its landmark "Religious Radio Across America" report in March 2026, and the numbers tell a story worth stopping for.
About one in four radio stations in the United States - more than 4,000 stations total - air faith-based or religious music and content. And the reach of those stations is extraordinary: 98% of U.S. adults live within local coverage of at least one religious radio station. On average, listeners can tune into six different religious broadcasts from their home address.
That is not a niche audience. That is nearly the entire country.
Who Is Listening
Nearly half of U.S. adults - 45% - say they listen to at least one type of religious programming, including religious music (37%), sermons and religious services (30%), religious talk shows (18%), and religious storytelling or audio dramas (16%).
Large majorities of White evangelical Protestants (76%) and Black Protestants (84%) say they listen to religious programming. But the audience is broader than many assume - even 18% of those who identify as atheist, agnostic, or "nothing in particular" say they tune in.
For those who do listen, it matters deeply. 37% of Americans who listen to religious audio programming say it is "extremely important" or "very important" to their religious or spiritual life.
What They Are Hearing
Music dominates the airwaves. Looking at U.S. religious radio stations collectively, music takes up 52% of all programming time. And the genre picture is clear: the most widely heard genres by far are contemporary Christian music and worship music.
The artists leading the airwaves are names JubileeCast readers know well. Just 10 artists accounted for 16% of all songs played on religious radio, including Phil Wickham, Matthew West, and MercyMe. Wickham claimed more airtime than any other artist - about 2.5% of all song plays.
The concentration at the top is striking: the most popular 10% of artists account for 87% of all songs played, meaning the remaining 90% of artists - likely thousands of independent and emerging voices - share just 13% of total airtime.
The Mission Behind the Music
About 77% of Christian stations explicitly mention spreading the Gospel or evangelism in their mission statements. That purpose-driven identity appears to be connecting. Listeners consistently cite faith encouragement, family-friendly content, and life guidance as the top reasons they tune in - not just music.
Separate data from Luminate's 2025 Year-End Report shows Christian and gospel music streaming grew 18.5% in the U.S. in 2025 compared to 2024 - one of the strongest growth rates of any genre.
The picture that emerges is of a Christian music world that is not shrinking - it is expanding, deepening, and reaching people in every corner of the country. One station at a time.
