Gospel music veteran Donald Lawrence is earning major recognition beyond the recording studio, as his work for the stage continues to make waves in New York theatre.
Lawrence was nominated for Outstanding Music in a Play at the 2026 Drama Desk Awards for Oh Happy Day!, the gospel-infused Off-Broadway production written by Jordan E. Cooper. The Drama Desk Awards honor excellence across Broadway, Off-Broadway, and Off-Off-Broadway theatre. Lawrence was nominated alongside composers from productions including Kenrex, The Brothers Size, The Imaginary Invalid, Cold War Choir Practice, and The Wild Duck.
Oh Happy Day! is a modern reimagining of Noah's Ark, centered around a Black family gathered at a birthday barbecue in Laurel, Mississippi. The production features original songs by Lawrence and was staged at The Public Theater in New York following its earlier run at Baltimore Center Stage.
The show also brought gospel voices to the stage, with Latrice Pace appearing as Glory Divine, alongside Tiffany Mann and Sheléa Melody McDonald as the angelic trio known as The Divines. Their performances helped give the production its church-rooted, soul-stirring sound.
Although the 2026 Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Music in a Play ultimately went to John Patrick Elliott for Kenrex, Lawrence's nomination marks a significant crossover moment for gospel music and theatre.
For Lawrence, the recognition is another reminder that gospel music continues to move beyond traditional platforms, finding fresh expression on the stage while carrying its message of faith, family, redemption, and joy.
