More than 20 years after The Passion of the Christ shocked Hollywood and became a global box office phenomenon, Mel Gibson has completed filming on The Resurrection of the Christ - a sweeping two-part cinematic event that the director says demanded "everything" of him.
Lionsgate and Icon Productions confirmed that principal photography has officially wrapped on the ambitious sequel, with The Resurrection of the Christ: Part One arriving in theaters on May 6, 2027, followed by Part Two on May 25, 2028.
The upcoming films will explore the aftermath of Jesus Christ's crucifixion, resurrection, and spiritual victory - themes Gibson has spent decades preparing to bring to the big screen.
"This film represents a major part of my life's work, and it has demanded everything of me as a filmmaker and as an artist," Gibson shared. "This is far more than a film to me. It's a mission I've carried for over twenty years to tell what I believe is the most important story in human history."
The original Passion of the Christ, released in 2004, became one of the most influential faith-based films ever produced, grossing hundreds of millions worldwide and remaining among the highest-grossing R-rated films in cinema history.
This time, Finnish actor Jaakko Ohtonen will portray Jesus Christ, replacing Jim Caviezel, whose portrayal became iconic among Christian audiences. Gibson reportedly chose to recast the role due to the extensive de-aging effects that would have been required for returning actors.
Lionsgate Motion Picture Group chair Adam Fogelson praised Gibson's creative vision and the emotional power already visible in footage from the production.
"Mel is a true visionary with an artist's eye for scale and a storyteller's instinct for emotional truth," Fogelson said. "Every image we've seen from set feels like a masterwork painting brought to life."
He continued:
"There are very few directors who can operate at this level of epic spectacle while at the same time delivering such depth and conviction. Mel has crafted a film of extraordinary ambition that audiences worldwide have been waiting to experience for over 20 years."
Gibson also emphasized the importance of reuniting with key collaborators from the original film.
"Reuniting with many of my original collaborators from 'The Passion of the Christ'-true masters of their craft-allowed us to bring this story to the screen exactly as I envisioned it."
As anticipation builds across Christian audiences and the film industry alike, Gibson ended with heartfelt gratitude for the team behind the production.
"I'm deeply grateful to my incredibly talented cast and crew for pouring their hearts into this production. Together, we created something powerful."
With its combination of biblical storytelling, cinematic spectacle, and spiritual themes, The Resurrection of the Christ is already shaping up to be one of the most talked-about faith films of the decade.
