It has been more than 113 days since Nancy Guthrie was forcefully taken from her Catalina Foothills home in Tucson, Arizona, in the early hours of February 1, 2026. No suspect has been publicly named. No arrest has been made. The investigation remains active - and this week, a retired FBI special agent stepped forward with the clearest public analysis of the case yet.

On May 23, Jennifer Coffindaffer, a former FBI special agent who has closely followed the case for nearly four months, took to X to outline four scenarios she believes could explain what happened to the 84-year-old mother of Today co-host Savannah Guthrie.

The four scenarios Coffindaffer outlined:

1. A "wrench attack" - a crime of opportunity carried out by opportunistic street-level criminals who targeted Nancy for her perceived wealth or vulnerability.

2. A ransom-motivated targeted abduction - Coffindaffer drew a comparison to the case of Heddy Braun, where a $3 million ransom demand was not made until two days after the abduction. In Nancy's case, a $6 million demand came within one day. Braun was later found alive, shackled in subzero temperatures in a trailer, approximately four days after her disappearance.

3. A handyman or trusted acquaintance - someone with prior access to Nancy's home or daily routine who used that knowledge to plan the abduction.

4. A revenge plot - someone motivated not by money alone but by a desire to cause maximum suffering to the Guthrie family - stripping them of a loved one, demanding ransom, and deliberately prolonging the emotional damage.

Where the investigation stands: Retired FBI Special Agent Steve Moore has argued that the single strand of hair publicly linked to the case almost certainly does not represent the full picture of forensic evidence. Moore stated that a single hair being the only trace left by an armed intruder is statistically near-impossible - suggesting investigators likely hold far more evidence than has been disclosed. DNA analysis continues at the FBI lab.

Former FBI Supervisory Special Agent Jason Pack told Parade that real investigations are built quietly, and that DNA evidence combined with forensic genealogy could still play a critical role - even if that progress is happening far from public view.

Nancy Guthrie remains missing. A reward of over $1.2 million is active for credible information. Anyone with information is urged to contact the FBI at 1-800-CALL-FBI or Tucson's anonymous tip line at 520-882-7463.

Nancy Guthrie is a woman of deep Catholic faith who was first reported missing when she failed to appear for her Sunday morning church livestream - something her family said she never missed. Her daughter Savannah has leaned publicly on prayer throughout, telling fans on air: "We feel your prayers." Those prayers have not stopped. Neither has the search.
