Evangelist Franklin Graham is strongly criticizing Democratic Texas state Rep. and U.S. Senate candidate James Talarico after Talarico claimed that "the Bible is silent" on abortion.
Talarico made the comments during an interview with podcaster Jamie Kern Lima, saying his Christian faith leads him to believe abortion decisions should be left to women in consultation with family, doctors, and faith leaders, rather than politicians or the state.
"Jesus never talks about abortion. The Bible is silent on abortion," Talarico said, arguing that Christians must consider Scripture as a whole when making ethical judgments on the issue.
Graham sharply rejected that claim in a social media post, calling it "an absolute lie." He cited Exodus 20:13, "You shall not murder," and argued that abortion is the taking of human life. Graham also pointed to Jeremiah 1:5, saying Scripture consistently affirms the value of life before birth.
Other Christian voices also responded. Kristan Hawkins, president of Students for Life of America, accused Talarico of trying to "hide behind Jesus to defend abortion," while broadcaster Glenn Beck warned Texas Republicans not to underestimate Talarico's political appeal.
The controversy comes as Talarico prepares to face Republican Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton in the November U.S. Senate race. Talarico has previously drawn criticism from conservative Christians for other theological comments, including his 2021 statement that "God is non-binary."
The debate has quickly become both a theological and political flashpoint, with abortion, biblical interpretation, and religious identity now emerging as key issues in the Texas Senate contest.
