Prime Cuts: "Heart On Fire," "Runs In The Blood," "Light On The Coast"
Overall Grade: 4/5
One of the strengths of Cochren & Co. has always been their ability to package timeless messages of faith and hope within irresistibly accessible melodies. On Runs In The Blood, Michael Cochren and company broaden their musical palette even further, drawing from pop, rock, country, folk, and even the shimmering textures of '90s radio pop. The result is an album that is consistently engaging, musically diverse, and packed with memorable hooks.
"Heart On Fire" is among the album's finest moments. Driven by an infectious melodic line and buoyant energy, the song practically demands audience participation. It's the kind of track that lingers long after the music stops, combining radio-friendly craftsmanship with genuine spiritual passion.
Equally impressive is "Light On The Coast," a beautifully produced anthem that recalls the reverberating sounds of '90s pop. Wrapped in atmospheric textures, the song unfolds as an affirming prayer, asking Jesus to shine His light into the darkest corners of the soul. Its uplifting message is matched by a soaring chorus that showcases Cochren's gift for melody.
The title track, "Runs In The Blood," may be the album's most musically distinctive offering. Anchored by mesmerizing electric guitar flourishes that evoke the tasteful stylings of Mark Knopfler, the song balances rootsy authenticity with contemporary polish. The track's central message of faith heritage and spiritual identity gives it additional emotional weight.
Elsewhere, "Free" breezes along with bright pop sensibilities and tasteful echo-laden vocal effects, while "All I Need To Know" slows things down with a piano-driven ballad reminiscent of Tim McGraw at his most reflective. The song captures the challenge of facing life's unexpected turns with courage and trust.
The album's emotional centerpiece is undoubtedly "What Grace Can Do." Built around a gorgeous piano arrangement, the song allows Cochren's vocals to shine as it explores the transformative power of divine grace. Its heartfelt lyrics and soaring delivery make it one of the record's most affecting performances.
"Love Is A Fight" continues the album's winning streak with another slice of polished pop beauty, demonstrating Cochren & Co.'s knack for crafting songs that are both inspirational and immediately memorable.
If there is a weakness to Runs In The Blood, it is that some of the album's latter tracks do not quite reach the heights of its strongest material. Nevertheless, Cochren & Co. have delivered a thoroughly enjoyable collection that successfully balances musical variety with lyrical substance. More importantly, the band continues to prove that accessible Christian pop need not sacrifice artistry or authenticity.
With its strong songwriting, polished production, and broad stylistic reach, Runs In The Blood stands as another impressive entry in Cochren & Co.'s growing catalog and one of the more enjoyable contemporary Christian releases of the year.
