Martin and Rose Music continues to blend education, history, and family-friendly entertainment with its latest release, "When Johnny Comes Marching Home." Originally written during the American Civil War by Patrick Gilmore, the classic song captures the universal anticipation of welcoming a loved one home. The new rendition introduces a fresh generation of children to an important piece of American history while emphasizing themes of hope, reunion, and community celebration.

The release arrives as the United States approaches its 250th anniversary, a milestone that inspired creators Daniel Martin and Stefani Rose Martin to explore songs that have helped shape the nation's cultural identity. Recent momentum for the track includes placements on Spotify's Nursery Rhymes and New Kids Music playlists, as well as Tidal's Kids Corner. The husband-and-wife team behind Martin and Rose Music has built one of the most successful independent children's music brands online, amassing more than 1.4 million monthly listeners, 138,000 YouTube subscribers, and over 172 million combined streams across Spotify and YouTube.

Q: For families who may be discovering Martin and Rose Music for the first time, can you share how the project began and what inspired you to create music specifically for children?

Martin and Rose Music formed over 10 years ago when we decided it would be fun to create educational children's content for YouTube.  After our videos did so well, we decided to start releasing the songs on all major platforms.  We have 4 children ages 18, 16, 10 and 8 so during the time we got started there was more than enough inspiration in our own home.  Our kids have always been there to help us gauge what is engaging, fun and entertaining for a young audience.

Q: Martin and Rose Music has grown to reach millions of listeners across streaming platforms. What have you learned about connecting with young audiences while creating music that parents can enjoy as well?

Kids love things that sound good.  The overly hype sounds of kids music is constantly evolving, which is why we are evolving into a much more organic sound.  Kids are smart, and often people try to make music that dumbs things down for them, so we try to make music that is high quality, memorable and fun for not only the kids but the parents as well.  We've seen classrooms across the country use our songs to teach their own students on a regular basis.

Q: "When Johnny Comes Marching Home" is a song with deep historical roots dating back to the American Civil War. What drew you to this classic, and why did you feel it would resonate with today's children and families?

We are approaching the 250 year anniversary of our nation so we wanted to explore the songs that shaped our country.  The steady marching beat and fun lyrics are easy to remember and kids seem to really love it.  I use it to teach rhythm and tempo in my own music classroom in Franklin, Tn.  It connects kids to history in a visceral way.  They aren't just reading about it, they're moving, singing and interacting with the story in the song.

Q: The song centers on themes of anticipation, reunion, and community celebration. How did you approach presenting those ideas in a way that is both engaging and meaningful for young listeners?

We intentionally were clear with which verses and lyrics we chose to present to cater to a younger audience.  We used repetition which helps them learn, not only the melody and music, but connects with the message at the same time.

Q: Between Daniel's extensive production background and Stefani's experience as a theater educator and director, how do your different creative perspectives influence the music you create together?

We both approach each song from different angles.  Stefani is more story driven.  She finds the reason or the "why" we need to put out each song during each season.  Daniel is far more technical.  Together, we have built a catalog of over 140 songs that not only are enjoyable but are evergreen. They sound like songs you'd hear on the radio versus something that lacks the sonic quality you'd often find in children's music.

Q: Looking ahead, what can listeners expect next from Martin and Rose Music, and are there any upcoming songs, albums, or educational projects that you're excited to share?

We will be releasing American History for Kids Volume 3 in July 2026.  These are the final songs in our American History for Kids series that is also tied to a curriculum that we will be putting out later this year.  Martin and Rose Music plans to venture into learning materials, books, videos and of course, more music! Our new website www.martinrosemusic.com is now live so parents and teachers can sign up to receive updates and free materials in the near future!
